Why the hate on Teflers?
I actually feel a bit sorry for English teachers,I only know a few but they are well qualified, having first and second degrees and being quite dedicated. However they get "lumped" together with the "teachers" Hanno describes, who hail "from the time when pretty much anyone with white skin automatically qualified as teacher". He further noted that "there was some real losers back then... ." This stereotype where "loser" has become synonymous with Tefler has stuck and unfortunately the well qualified have to live with it.

Agree, MD. My point is that if one were to scrutinise bar owners, restaurant owners, businessmen, etc, we all know there would be a few (dare I say a lotf?) stinky ones.
Diversionary tactic.Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not sure if I really want to know the answer to this question, but what the fuck is a professor doing in a playground?JL wrote:After almost 2 months of teaching experience, I totally believe the hate is real. At the school where I work, there is definitely a certain snobbery towards teflers. Particularly from a professor who looks down his nose at us lesser mortals as if we are something, he scraped off his shoe.
He isn't a native English speaker (Eastern European) and at first I thought it was just because he was foreign that he didn't mix. When I tried small talking to him in the playground, he simply looked at me and walked away! Later another teacher told me that as a professor, he despises teflers because we cheapen his professional status.
So yeah, I think tefler hatred is real. It's alive and well and living in Phnom Penh.

Did he tell you to keep it a secret?JL wrote:When I tried small talking to him in the playground,
Send gavinmac his name and let's check his credentials. Sounds more like he's dodgy/nervous to me, unless your idea of small talk involves where to buy ice.

I love that story about the bargirl who turned down a drink from a teacher with the words, "it's ok. I earn more than you."
I remember one of them asking me if it was really true that some foreigners only earned a grand a month.

A tefler trying to justify his existence everybody!vladimir wrote:Agree, MD. My point is that if one were to scrutinise bar owners, restaurant owners, businessmen, etc, we all know there would be a few (dare I say a lotf?) stinky ones.

I will stop hating teflers when they stop doing hard drugs and drinking too much how about that? Having met too many teachers I would rather my kids go to school in another country.
Go ahead and scrutinise us others. Talk is cheap, what you got?
Bless

No, just posting in a discussion and answering the question.
Alexandra, so some take hard drugs and drink too much. That doesn't mean all, but great to see you setting a good example for your kids by generalising.
It's taken you this long to realise your kids would be better off at a school in another country? You're sharp!
It wasn't aimed at you, but you don't have to be very smart to read what some people on here get up to, even just recently.
Have you been reading the posts lately? Been kind hard to miss.

I'm gonna side with vlad here. He takes the tefler jokes in good spirits.
No one hates Teflers. That's a dick thing to say. Why would anyone hate a group holistically? Clearly there are wasters who turn up on these shores and - lacking skills - fall into tefling because the schools have no standards but to dump on the whole group is childish. There are some - many, even, most - people working as teachers who do a fine job, lead quiet lives and don't spend their time shitting themselves on St 182.
Let's be a bit more mature about this nonsense.

I genuinely think the wages and conditions for the TEFL jobbers are unacceptable. Cheap bastard employers. Living on $1000 p/mth is no joke.

Sure, but there are at least more people rocking up every day who think that $750 a month is a viable wage.Petrol Head wrote:I genuinely think the wages and conditions for the TEFL jobbers are unacceptable. Cheap bastard employers. Living on $1000 p/mth is no joke.

In 2016, that's crazy. What would motivate someone to put up with that??Lucky Lucan wrote:Sure, but there are at least more people rocking up every day who think that $750 a month is a viable wage.Petrol Head wrote:I genuinely think the wages and conditions for the TEFL jobbers are unacceptable. 1. Some fakers don't have a genuine degree/TEFL
2. Some have criminal records
3. Some are older, like myself, and the market is ageist
4. Many are here only for a few months 'to 'do the Bodge', in their parlance, before they move on elsewhere, and they share dorms/ rooms/ whatever, they have minimal costs, so $750 is enough for their pastimes.
5. The continuance of this situation is actively encouraged by those it benefits.
6. Work permits have become a new ransom tool. Teachers get charged way more than the cost, they have to pay it off, and the school sometimes retains the permit to stop teachers leaving, threatening to revoke it. One 'school' I worked at threatened to contact my embassy if I walked out, I gave them the contact details and begged them to make fools of themselves. My embassy!
If one is naive enough to think that there has not been collaborative price-fixing (lowering of salaries) among school owners, I don't know.
On a vaguely related note, I have noticed increasing signs of xenophobia among Khmer teachers/ admin lately, they keep asking " Why you earn so much?'
I reply: You missed a 'do'.
Meh, I didn't become a teacher to make money, but it would be nice to be comfortable, I don't need much, no fancy car, no fancy house.

A lot of people in the US, especially in rural areas, make less than $12,000 per year.Petrol Head wrote:In 2016, that's crazy. It's not really difficult to live on $300/month in PP. It's possible to even maintain a healthy lifestyle on $300/month.
