Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

It's quite simple, vlad. It is a truism that a population that - for whatever reason - refuses to engage in the democratic process properly will get political leaders who take advantage of that.
In more mature 'democracies' like Singapore, that can work. The population there have almost signed a Faustian pact with its political class along the lines of 'Leave us free to become richer, and you politicians can do what you like - we forfeit our right to democracy.' They are all relatively happy with that.
In HK for a century people ignored politics to get rich and now - in a new political reality led by China - they are facing the consequences. Over that century a robust political system could have been built up. They didn't bother, and there is a vacuum now being filled by Beijing.
In places like Cambodia people either don't engage through hopelessness or, when they do, they engage by accepting the highest price for their vote. If you sell your vote, you can't really complain if your political leaders are equally corrupt.

Err, what are the other six ??
The other 6 are all fantastical populist pledges promising raises in income and welfare.
They have listened to the people and know what they want. Or maybe that's not true?

What does it matter? I've seen 16 year olds beeing politically more engaged than 60 year olds. I'm actually just starting to get informed properly and a part of that is getting to know the alternatives.Lucky Lucan wrote:Favorite party? Anyway, I'm quite interested in the "League for Democracy Party" at the moment. They sound not too bad.

http://aa.com.tr/en/politics/cambodia-p ... ion/539010After the disputed 2013 elections, hundreds of people took to the streets to highlight a number of issues. But ultimately, the wave of mass protests over government rule and an unsatisfactory minimum wage for garment workers peaked and ended in Jan. 2014, when government forces shot dead five civilians during a strike.
Two other civilians had also already been shot dead by state forces in other protests in Sept. and Nov. 2013.
Since then, such numbers have not been replicated.
Political analyst Ou Virak told Anadolu Agency on Thursday that the talk of a such a revolution was outdated and more of a “sign of paranoia” than anything else.
“They have to always appear to be really onto something or after something and exposing a potential colour revolution by NGOs is a juicy thing to mention to get the attention of their bosses,” he said, adding that any revolution would have been likelier “two or three years ago.”
Since the crackdown, however, calls for change have largely faded from the public discourse.
“People are much more complacent now. Look at the crackdown," Virak said.
"People thought the genie was out of the bottle and young people couldn’t be stopped, but there is too much trauma in the Cambodian psyche and you saw beatings and shootings of protesters, and people retracted back into fear.”
And this is why "social media revolutions" won't be successful in Cambodia - it will be very difficult to mobilize citizens onto the streets, there is too much fear.

Alan has given the perfect description of the shape of politics in both the UK and US.alanclarke72 wrote:C-Mon wrote:So what's your favourite party out there then?
Most of us have no skin in the game, C-Mon. Looking at the scene from the outside, Cambodia is appallingly served by its politics classes, each as driven by ignorance, bigotism and self-interest as each other.
Conversely, there is a long standing idiom in politics: A country gets the leaders it deserves.

I've been enjoying some of the jazz nights popping up around town, and certainly anywhere but Pontoon. I also like a good pool party too.C-Mon wrote:So what's your favourite party out there then?
My French friend used to come here as a kid, and she'd see the CPP "Cambodia Peoples Party" signs, and thought it was just advertising for a big party.

A very good friend of mine is a die-hard LDP supporter. The exiled Khmer-French cunt is hopeless. Whatever Party the people vote for, the current regime will still win outright in this general election. I envisage there will blood, a lot of it!
