That ship has already sailed, you will struggle to find a pub that's not part of a chain these days, at least that's the case in Bristol.
My former favourite pub is now a Co-Op.
Is living in Cambodia better than living in a first world country?

Suppose it depends where you live but I would say:Jamie_Lambo wrote:rarely, a pint of strongbow cost me £3.80 from my mates local boozer in his village the other week, and thats up norf, its about £3.50 in my local boozer, i can get 4 cans of strongbow in asda for fucking $3.80, going out is a rip off in EnglandJock Jock wrote: I got the Guinness one wrong. I'm paying £2.75 (so $3.50) a pint at the Ship Inn in the Devonshire Quarter area of Sheffield. Normal pints like local brew real ales are anything from £2.25-£2.50. Last night they were £1.99 each - a Monday special. They currently have a cider special going - pints of several real ciders (including 7.5% cloudy Old Rosie) for £2.40.
Ok, this is a Wetherspoons, but similar specials can be found at normal pubs. The pub across the road from the Ship has a Tuesday night special: all real ales are £2.25 a pint to attract people in for the football shown on TV.
more cons that have been mentioned that i can relate to,
Cons-
- lack of decent Gyms!
- lack of decent Boxing/Kickboxing gyms
- Supermarkets expensive and poorly stocked
- Lack of a decent music/gig scene
- Lack of decent footpaths
Pros-
- Outdoor concerts are free
- Said outdoor concerts dont sell over priced piss
- Only bills you have to worry about is your Rent/Electric/Water
- some gyms here in PP are really good (if you are prepared to pay);
- up to a few months ago, the music scene in PP was really good (and mostly free) - now it seems to have tailed off. Will pick up again, I'm sure;
- a couple of the supermarkets here are very well stocked;
- biggest bill here will be medical, when a cement truck runs over you - as one almost did me a few days ago.
Agree about the foot-paths. Overall I would say Cambodia is superficially more interesting than the West but really, apart from the booze etc. and certain specific interests (kickboxing etc), there is generally SFA to do - I'd hate to be a kid here if not in an expensive International School. Even the very small open area near us was built over - why allow kids play when there is money to be made???
My big plus for the West is it is generally:
- clean;
- organised;
- language, a common viewpoint and common sense; and
- has places to walk - both in towns and outside.
Having said that, I tried living back in the UK a few years ago for 12 months, but got tired of it and ended up fleeing back to Africa (Kenya/Congo). So for the moment, I still vote for developing countries. Or in Congo's case, receding countries.
