This is just a vague question I occasionally ask myself. Just for the fun of debate - what's your honest opinion?

Welcome aboard new poster, and yes this place is a hidden pearl, just don't tell anyone about it, especially not hipsters and the sort, we wanna keep this place pristine, untouched by average carpetbaggers and bottom feeder opportunists for as long as possible.
Good luck on K440 a 'great place' to be.

Yes it is far better here in Cambodia but a lot more expensive than living in The UK. The problem is there is somewhere to spend money 24 hours a day unlike my home town where pubs close and most people do not go out during the week.

No, it's horrible. Why anyone would live here is beyond me, especially westerners.

Haha - my money’s on Playboy
It can be great or terrible.
If you make 3k$ up you can live like a king with full time cleaner, cook and multi-porpouse driver/guard. Pretty much you can say bye bye to all those boring time consuming things that take away so many hours from your life in the West such as cleaning ironing cooking buying food driving etc.
You can enjoy cheap alcohol available 24/7 and just by looking OK and being a bit dapper girls will be attracted to you. It's always hot so if you enjoy swimming it's great for that.
If you make little money less than 1k a month it can be very hard since there are no public hospitals no safety nets when you reach rock bottom or easy jobs that pay enough to get out of it unless you are very skilled.
Drugs are very widespread, cheap and of dangerously unstable quality. they can ruin a person very fast. if you are or were addicted to hard drugs Cambodia is a place where you will die fast. Almost nobody helps addicts here.
Your living cost can be much less or much more than in the West depending on your habits and current spending.

Not much to add to jack's accurate description, except maybe that redtape is easily dealt with here with a couple notes.

for me some of my simple pros and cons compared to life in England...
Pros
Cheaper Cost of Living
Cheaper Transportation (moto/tuktuk/bus etc)
Cheaper Alcohol
Better Atmosphere
Better Weather
Better Beaches
Friendlier People
More Sociable Lifestyle (being able to afford a more sociable lifestyle also)
Not having to Wipe your Arse
Next door to Thailand/Vietnam if you fancy a Holiday
Visas are hassle free
Road Laws are much more relaxed than the west
The Fact Cambodia now has Cider is a massive Pro for me haha
The Availability of Public Transport (you barely have to set foot out your door without someone offering you a lift)
Not having to Queue up every time you want another drink in a Bar
Not having to Pay each time you order a drink in a Bar
Having an Abundant Amount of Good looking Girls in a Bar
The Abundance of Cheap Massage Parlours
Cons
Finding Excuses to stay in and not go out
Finding a decent Paid Job (in SHV, going to be relocating to PP)
Sometimes there can be a Language Barrier (this has changed now i can speak a lot better khmer but thought id include it)
The in your face Poverty (its sad/unpleasant to see sometimes)
can sometimes get too hot between April-June
Motos claiming to know where you want to go but later admitting they dont have a clue
there are probably more cons if i really thought about it, the longer i stay in Cambodia some things that didnt used to bother me, start to, and other things that used to bother me, are no longer an issue (being able to speak Khmer can make life a hell of a lot easier living and getting by)

One thing that I forgot is personal safety, Cambodia is much more dangerous than most European countries. Back in the EU I could leave a Moto in the driveway without worrying about it being stolen in Cambodia you should have good locks on your house and any Moto parked inside. Also bag snatchers on motos and pickpocketers are quite common. Cambodia has quite a few annoying and dangerous diseases that aren't present in Europe which can ruin your day.
I'm in the U.K. for a couple of months doing some work and am questioning this whole cost of living thing. I'm paying less in rent here than I paid in BKK1 (admittedly for a smaller place) but I'm struggling to find much that is more expensive especially given the weak pound. I eat much better here and the range of cheap and affordable supermarket food is excellent. Cheese. Milk and veggies are incredibly cheap. I made a meal of baked smoked haddock and spinach tonight and it cost around 3 pounds. I finish that off with a portion of fruit that I can't get in Cambodia (raspberries tonight) and the weight is falling off me. I bought six kiwi fruit here today for less than a dollar. Plus i like to walk and it's so much easier here. Im averaging around 8km a day here.
I'm paying around 3 bucks for a pint of draft Guinness and less for a wide range of English ales.
Eating out is more expensive and things like mobile charges are pricier but apart from that the competition amongst stores is keeping prices down.
I'm going to London this week on the train and the fare is fifty quid return. Not bad at all.
Taxes hurt though.
I agree with jack re safety. I have a bad habit of walking around with my phone in my hand. After Moto thieves tried to grab my phone at least five times in three years (my fault admittedly) it's nice to do that without fearing a little shit is about to come up behind me for another grab.

I don't trust people to not grab my phone here in Australia. I have one eye out for someone that might do that. In Australia I cannot choose to hang out at a cafe or bar to people watch and see who might drop by as it costs a fortune to drink out. Fruit and vege here have been cold stored, fish caught off Tasmania is sent to Asia for packaging snd then sent back. A pomello costs $5.

OTOH if you prefer to eat outside, Cambodia is superb value, you can get a decent meal for a fiver, a good meal for a tenner and fine dining for $30 a head, with drinks and wines way cheaper as well.. I made a meal of baked smoked haddock and spinach tonight and it cost around 3 pounds.
What I miss is stuff like parks and bicycle paths, open air concerts and festivals, fountains etc, which you find a plenty everywhere in western Europe. Abd clean streets.
