Why don't Cambodians hate the Chinese?
Why don't Cambodians hate the Chinese?
Following on from the Cambodian / barang and the Cambodian/ Vietnamese hatred/ dislike/ despication, I was wondering why the Cambodians don't hate the Chinese ?
Ok, I have heard that the Chinese don't think much of Cambodians and visa-versa, but there doesn't seem to be any noticeable manifestation of this in any political context. Possibly if has to do with the fact that most of the business and politics in Cambodian is caught up with different waves of Chinese coming to Cambodia to settle. Known as Sino-Khmer. But
With fact that the Chinese supported pol pots regime for many years causing untold suffering and depletion of the Cambodian population. Far far more than the Vietnamese ever did.
That they were targeted by the KR because they controlled a lot of the business/ politics etc
And because the Chinese look down so much on the Cambodians.
I was wondering why people think there isn't more hatred generated towards them nowadays?

I am writing from experience and about to hit the hay. To Khmers eyes having chinese blood makes you superior. I think the Chinese are hard working people and they showed examples out of it. But I love the khmers people hence I have a kid with one, but my own personal problem is that Khmers feel insecure themselves and get looked down for having dark skin.

Thanks for the reply but it is common knowledge that the Vietnamese are hard workers and good at making money too. Possibly something to do with interbreading over a thousand years of Chinese occupation. But if you think the idea is a common one and it persists, that just poses more questionphat kunthea wrote:I am writing from experience and about to hit the hay. Is it possibly to do with the fact how the Chinese have managed to take over finicially most of Asia?
They don't invade ( except for Mongolia , Tibet etc) in the way the Viets did. Prefering to move in slowly taking things over from the inside and working with the rulers.

It poses me more questions myself the more I think about it. Peace.

Khmers all have Chinese relations (a slight exaggeration perhaps). They've been here since Angkor and for hundreds of years in every town in every province Khmer farmers would buy/trade for supplies, tools, feed with Chinese and Sino-Khmer. It's historically been a relatively symbiotic relationship. Worth noting though that like the Viets, Chinese were also denied a path to citizenship by the Cambodian legislature during the Sihanouk years.

What about the French then? Surely they hate the French? Everyone hates the French.

No big animosity about French, other than the fact that we're all French, at least if you're white. A Lot of people here do actually have Chinese ancestry, especially around the main towns and south around Kampotspitthedog wrote:What about the French then? Surely they hate the French? Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
china doesn't border cambo. so the land and sea thing doesnt count. even though there are huge chinese plantations here. but thats another story.
I suspect most Cambodians see how much Chinese money has poured into Cambodia in the last couple of years. Cambodia's pivot to the east might make ASEAN and the west uneasy but money talks.
The Viets were the 6th biggest investor in Cambodia in 2014. Rightly or wrongly I guess the Cambodians don't think that the Chinese want to take over Cambodia. And maybe even that, most of those with wealth and power here, are in fact part Chinese.scobienz wrote:I suspect most Cambodians see how much Chinese money has poured into Cambodia in the last couple of years. Did some one delete one of my posts about how the Chinese took over businesses in the Philippines in the 1600's and the animosity that brought about, or did I just fuck up somewhere?Namhong also praised the big economic achievements between Vietnam and Cambodia in the past few years. By late 2014, Vietnam had 167 valid investment projects in Cambodia, registered at $3.46 billion. Vietnam’s investment in Cambodia hit $28 million in this year’s first half, making it the sixth largest investor in Cambodia.
Meanwhile, two-way trade turnover reached $3.3 billion in 2014, and $2.5 billion in this year’s first eight months. The figure is targeted to be $5 billion in 2015.
Very true about the not bordering the country thing as a strong reason. Although, that doesn't allow for why they don't hate the Thais, but that was discussed on another thread already.JimSocks wrote:china doesn't border cambo. so the land and sea thing doesnt count. even though there are huge chinese plantations here. but thats another story.
I would say that they have been involved in all Cambodia vs its neighbour wars though, the most obvious and devestating one being the 20 odd years of continued support of the DK / PDK, even after so much devastation to Cambodia. Bringing it to the brink, as many said, of non- existence as a nation.
That's a lot more damning to my mnd than anything the Viets appear to have done.
Is there some truth in the fact that, as they gained more hold on the wealth and power of Cambodia, the' rulers ( Sihanouk for one) just took the money and looked the other way?
It all seems very odd. I mean, why on earth would you willingly hand over the countries wealth and power to foreigners? Even if Sihanouk didn't support their citizenship as such.

100% this!!! Plus china has never invaded or taken khmer land in its history. An enemy (china) of my enemy( vietnam) is my friend. On a personal level I much prefer vietnamese over chinese because chinese especially mainlanders are pure barbarians. ironic that their ancestors saw south east asians and yue peoples as barbarians when their descendants are the most uncouth people on the planet.

I never understood this inferiority complex khmers have towards chinese. to dispel this belief all khmers need to do is visit mainland china once and see chinese people spitting, pissing and shitting in streets. I was in Macau last year and even saw chinese people spitting on the carpet in the casino LOL. Chinese are also stereotyped as being more attractive than khmers which is far from the truth, the average mainland male and female are quite un attractive.
