Had the same issue with my GF's daughter. They don't eat sweets so much but dental hygiene was abysmal. Dragged them to the dentist, had everything fixed, and introduced the habit of regularly brushing their teeth after meals.

And while all major town water supplies in Cambodia are now chlorinated NONE are fluoridated.
Accordingly, seriously consider getting the child fluoride tablets to protect the emerging adult teeth.

We used to have major problems with kids teeth in Aboriginal communities when I worked in Australia. The problem was mainly caused by the ingestion of a high amount of sugary foods and poor oral hygiene. Here's a study on Indigenous oral health that has some useful info.
Review of Indigenous oral health
Diet - caries can mostly be prevented by having a healthy diet
[7]. The traditional diet of many Indigenous people included a
lot of fibre and protein and was low in sugar. Traditional bush
foods generally required a lot chewing which increased the
amount saliva (spit) that was produced and helped keep teeth
clean [9]. By comparison, the modern diet of many Indigenous
people includes a lot of processed and sugary foods that
increase the risk of developing caries [7][9].
Tooth brushing - tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste
everyday is essential for good oral health. Evidence suggests
that oral care was not necessary with a traditional Indigenous
diet, for reasons given above, and was not part of all Indigenous
cultures [7]. People who are less well off are less likely to brush
their teeth and floss everyday [7][11]

Interesting article. For adults also oral infection can have serious effects on cardiac surgery outcome. Useful to be aware of if one is considering or requiring cardiac surgery.Ot Mean Loi wrote:For a very recent perspective on Cambodian oral hygiene and dental health please see:

It is recommended to view oral health in the perspective of systemic health, specifically, recognizing the deleterious impact that an untreated odontogenic infection can have upon cardiac surgery. Therefore, considering scheduling constraints and the urgency of the operation, if time and resources permit, then it is suggested that patients who undergo elective cardiac surgery should be screened preoperatively to ensure that any oral infection is diagnosed and definitively treated. Such an investment can yield significant improvements in surgical outcome and overall patient health. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18778297

Since I regained custody of my children I took them to the dentist for the first time in years.
Both had major cavities due obviously to 2.5 years of sugary crap and no brushing regime.
It's so far taken 5 appointments to get it under control.
Not happy about it at all. Thankfully it's sorted now.

My own kids have had terrible dental hygiene. Too much sugar all the time.
Little crackhead fuckers.
The four year old has learned now he needs to brush. Still battling the two year old.

When I was teaching at a private school that cost about $4k USD per year, many of my grade 1 and grade 2 students had a mouthful of black, rotten teeth. I could never understand that. A lot of these kids were being picked up in late model Range Rovers and big Lexus trucks, yet, their parents couldn't throw down a hundred dollar bill for a visit or 2 ( or 3) to Roomchang or something.
Kinda hard to pronounce the English words when half of your teeth are chipped, rotten, misssing, half gone.

I guess everything in a khmer bakery is sweet - even the slices of pizza. Som tam is much sweeter here than in Thailand, and they like their sweet dipping sauces. Then there's those jelly drinks.
They should adopt a more English diet as it's a well known fact that we all have perfect teeth.

"I don't care what the people are thinking, i ain't drunk i'm just drinking"
its the sugar for sure, no point going to a dentist if the diet isnt changed, and fluoride might help to but on a high sugar diet they will just keep rotting even with fillings, brushing and fluoride. and also the diet will be doing more damage then just the teeth. likely lead to diabetes etc
That myth was busted a long time ago. Eating sugar does not cause diabetes or hyperactivity.flatjack wrote:likely lead to diabetes etc
