In non-potato land, they've sold 3 Maybach s600s to August this year. $600k a pop, without the personalized stitching in the seats...

Haha - my money’s on Playboy
A Bentley Flying Spur would do me nicely for trips to the beach.
I suspect a little out of my price range, but good for you if you want and can afford one.
I think I've said it before but in my experience the only people who really resent money are incompletely-educated middle class white people who have failed at life despite the opportunities afforded them.
Everybody else is prepared openly to say they would like some more of it.

Agree, incompletely educated people also usually get the wrong end of the stick, or resort to strawman arguments. Here people criticise the look/ suitability of a car - which anybody could tell you is based on subjectivity - and an incompletely educated person would see it as a criticism of money.
Or perhaps just pretend to see it that way.
I personally would go for an Audi/Merc, based on performance, looks, safety, suitability to the local environment. One could always spray it gold, put blue plastic under the door-handles, place an apple sticker on the rear, and a large VIP card on the windscreen. If one was desperate enough to prove one had entered the hallowed halls of nouveau richedom.
Then call mum back home, and say 'I've finally made it!' I'm a big fish in a small pond! I earn more than some poor people! Ecstasy!
What is the price difference? I could use the savings on silly stuff, like a place to live/food/education/healthcare.
But, I digress.
I suppose it's anathema to some people that anybody would consider something they had spent so much on as vulgar or ostentatious. Perhaps we should be sensitive to their feelings, and keep quiet.
Yet the same people who vigorously defend such ostentatious displays are the first in line to criticise Khmers for the same behaviour.
It says a lot.

Well, its a valid point, if you are measuring the merits of cars and their respective owners on a thread about certain car types and their owners, then surely part of the analysis is what you yourself drive. This is especially so I would have thought when strongly held opinions are made public, as seems to be the case here @Vladamir
So, yes, what is your preferred car? How does it compare practically and suitaibilty-wise for Cambodia's roads?

I could see Vlad in a Yugo Zaszava or Nissan March/Micra.
I've sat in a new Rolls (drop top) and it really is a thing of beauty.
Over the top? Maybe. The owner of said Rolls (a rather elderly posh finance guy) also bought the smaller hard top "For the winter".
Now that's OTT.
My last car was a new Mercedes as was the one before. It was for work so I had no choice and personally I see then as an old mans car, unless it's a V8 but even then I'd choose a BMW, Audi RS6 or Skyline.
In UAE they have some truly hidious Rollers.

I don't have a car here, would be way too frustrating and would lie unused, even if I could afford it, Seriously who would chose to sit in traffic jams when you can go around them?
Even Lord Playboy has been spotted on a pink Scoopy zig-zagging around town...
If I did have to use one in town, I would choose this:
Perhaps a Lexus sedan for road trips, don't like SUVs.
My objection to Rolls/Bentley is based purely on subjectivity, road suitability, and my dislike of ostentatious people.
No one can dispute the workmanship/reliability factor.
I just think Audi/Merc/Volvo would be a far more sensible choice, also very reliable/safe/ and nicer - looking.
If poor people don't matter, why spend so much trying to impress them, right?

You missed the part where we already established that the vast majority of Khmers look at a Rolls and assume its worth a lot less than a merc or audi.... Ferraris and Lambos impress the locals, Rolls impress the people who buy them.
It must be miserable getting this hung up on how other people choose to spend their money.
Edit: volvo? Srsly? Getting a car from an official dealership which can service it is a big deal, and there is no official volvo dealer here.

Is that because it's the only car you could fill with your friends?vladimir wrote:If I did have to use one in town, I would choose this:

Not at all, but thanks for the amateur psychology pitch. We'll call you...Bubble T wrote:It must be miserable getting this hung up on how other people choose to spend their money.
As miserable as having to defend ostentatious behaviour, but criticising Khmers for it?
They can do what they like with it, but don't expect me to say I approve of their choices when I don't simply to please you and your buddies, that's retarded.
I'm criticising the unsuitability/motive for buying the car, not how much it cost. Are you blond? Read the sentence.
So Volvo doesn't have a dealer here? Fine, then scrap that choice, I agree with you.
Invest the same amount in land, a house, a more suitable vehicle, I understand.
comprends-tu cela? Il est assez simple, vraiment .
