Apparently older than that:
In India the holy scriptures of the Vedic provide written evidence of the oldest dreadlocks. The exact date of its origin is still unknown, from 2500 to 1500 BC. The god Shiva and his followers were described in Scripture as jaTaa, meaning "wearing hair matted nodes," which probably derived from the Dravidian word Catai, meaning twist or wrap

Theyve been around longer than that, basically anyone who doesnt cut or wash their hair can end up with them, no matter what race they are.
thats not true, if you dont cut or wash your hair it will matt/severely matt, you can roll it to resemble something similar but to have dreadlocks requires a lot of maintenance and combing in order to keep them tight and in shape, dreadlocks dont just happen, its like saying your hair plaits itself
ironically enough, people with dreadlocks actually wash and comb their hair just like normal people
