motorbike taxi driver accusing me of theft
just had a motorbike taxi guy cursing at me and then when he stopped turned out he thinks I stole money off him 8 years ago. I wasnt even in the country then but theres no way I could convince him it wasnt me. He seemed genuine but Im just wondering if its some kind of scam attempt? Anyway hopefully I dont run into him again

I was in a bar in SHV a few months ago... The bartender was convinced that I was some guy she knew in Phnom Penh from years ago, although I am not.
Apparently he had loved and left her, or was otherwise a bad person, and she kept saying as much in front of the other girls and giving me the look of death.
I laughed it off and tried to lighten the mood but she was convinced I was the same guy.

I think the more important question is why?gavinmac wrote:How much did you steal and how did you steal it?
These guys don't make a lot of money - that's shameful behaviour.

There are variations of this going on constantly all over the country. "You no good man! You not pay! You pay me twenty dolla, now!" It's essentially a very uncreative scam. I imagine they use it mostly on people who look like they would scare easily.flatjack wrote:just had a motorbike taxi guy cursing at me and then when he stopped turned out he thinks I stole money off him 8 years ago. Me neither. I travel extensively though Cambodia and have been the subject of mistaken identity several times and they have been quite insistent.gavinmac wrote:I don't think there are variations of this going on constantly all over the country.MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote: There are variations of this going on constantly all over the country. I've always been able to chat it through and clear up confusion.
I believe it's most likely confusion due to all people with big noses looking the same.

But I thought Khmers were experts at recognizing foreigners from brief interactions years ago.Khmerhamster wrote: I believe it's most likely confusion due to all people with big noses looking the same.

I'm not good with faces either, but I err on the side of caution. If I were the moto driver I might have suspected that it was you, but let you get away. Good on him... give him the money back!

Of course they are.gavinmac wrote:But I thought Khmers were experts at recognizing foreigners from brief interactions years ago.Khmerhamster wrote: I believe it's most likely confusion due to all people with big noses looking the same.
Experts in their own mind.
And they argue with complete conviction until one small point makes then reconsider ('I don't own a blue shirt') and they grudgingly admit 'ok, maybe you aren't the person who shot my uncle'.
But don't be expecting an apology for your public shaming.

Give the money you stole to the next motodop you meet. If you run into the first guy again, just tell him that you already paid him back. You are fcuked!! Don't pass home, head to the airport and take the next flight out (take a Tuk-tuk though).
