PP Post : A Final Call For SIM Registration
I had my Metfone SIM turned off a few months ago and had to take my passport to the office to get it turned on again. The stupid thing is that I bought it there originally (albeit many years ago) and had to produce my passport then but they had never bothered to record or 'lost' the info. Also when I check now it is still not registered to me but some random Khmer.
To check Metfone registration call *200# to get into the Registration Menu and option 1 (Search) to check recorded info for your SIM.
My Smart SIM is in my GF's name and I was sent an SMS to go to the office to verify the recorded name. I took my passport and explained that she had bought 2 SIMs with one digit difference and they said they couldn't change it from her name but that it was alright and it wouldn't be turned off.
To register your Smart SIM online go to https://simreg.smart.com.kh/ and follow the instructions.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've heard similar announcements, and have not been asked for ID for any of the dozens of SIM cards I bought in the past few years.

Not necessarily so, Felgers.
Just go to the SIM Card telco office/ main office and take your passport.
They will photo copy the title page of your passport and "register" that SIM card number to you and all will be sweet ever after.

They will just be glad to "Register" the SIM to a real person and maintain your business.

Smart asks for 5 phone numbers called recently for verification. That's easy to produce with any phone.
My SIM was registered to a random Srey Khmer but was still blocked for national security. I did not bother to re-activate it. I didn't move to a practically lawless country to be put in strange databases for national security reasons. They can fuck right off.

Is it really an unreasonable request? Are you going local sim-less in protest?Alexandra wrote:Smart asks for 5 phone numbers called recently for verification. That's easy to produce with any phone.

Your name, address, passport number, passport copies & employment contract are being held in triplicate if you have a visa, drivers license, bank account - hell if you stay in a guesthouse they'll take copies of your passport
Is the phone number just a step too far for you?
surely you were fingered when entering the country?Alexandra wrote:Smart asks for 5 phone numbers called recently for verification. That's easy to produce with any phone.

My address, passport number and bank accounts are not wirelessly connected 24/7 tracking my every move. And no, they don't know anything about where I work and no there are no employment requirements for obtaining a visa.
My fiber connection is in my surname only, that's fine because I don't carry it in my pocket wherever I go.

Surely my fingers aren't wirelessly connected and trackable at any given time, unlike a mobile phone. I don't talk with my fingers, so there are no finger calls to surveil.Abou-Gor wrote:surely you were fingered when entering the country?

Not only that but I get thumbed every time I go to the bank. Always brightens up the day...Abou-Gor wrote:surely you were fingered when entering the country?Alexandra wrote:Smart asks for 5 phone numbers called recently for verification. That's easy to produce with any phone.

Fair enough. Surely Cambo is just catching up with other countries though?Alexandra wrote:I am going locally registered in other's name in protest.Khmerhamster wrote:Is it really an unreasonable request? Are you going local sim-less in protest?

I guess you must go to more interesting places than me.
I pity the guy who is charged with digitally tracking me - he'll surely die of boredom before he finds anything useful.
