Cambodia Daily criticised for misquoting GSM expat
Cambodia Daily criticised for misquoting GSM expat
Hello. I discovered in the past few days a news article in the Cambodia Daily with quotes attributed to having been said by my self. In turn, I discovered this discussion http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/view ... =1&t=56313. I wish to inform you that the Cambodia Daily seriously misquoted me. I have contacted the editor of that publication by email today, with the following......
Sir/Madam,
I refer to the following article......
https://www.cambodiadaily.com/news/immi ... es-115982/
My name is Lindsay WESTPHAL, and your journalist has seriously misquoted and caused damage to my marriage which is unfortunately estranged. This article as quoted by your journalist has caused damage by virtue of seriously misquoting me.
It reads.....
"Lindsay Westphal, a police officer who splits his time between Alice Springs, Australia and Phnom Penh, said he was considering retiring to Cambodia next year but would rather be on a business visa so that he could work “a little bit here and there.”
“You’d get bored,” the 53-year-old said between bites of schnitzel. “I don’t think a lot of people will take it up.”"
This is NOT what I said. I told your reporter that I was not the person to talk for an opinion, as I had no interest in retiring in Cambodia, but possibly in Vietnam, the home country of my my wife. I also stated to him, that I was not eligible to retire until another 3 & 1/2 years. I said to him words to the effect of..."if for example if I were able to retire next year, and if I chose Cambodia, i would look for a business visa to allow me to work here and there to avoid the boredom given I am not an aged person.." At no time did I state I was considering retiring next year. And at no time did I state I split my time between Alice Springs and Phnom Penh. I did in fact tell him that I was only in Phnom Penh for a few days pending a visa application to return to Vietnam. I also stated I would not consider Cambodia given the expected civil unrest to be expected at the next elections in Cambodia.
My wife has read your article on line and is accusing me now of secretly planning retirement in Cambodia.
I seek that you immediately take action to correct the damage you have done as a result of having been seriously misquoted..
Regards,
Lindsay WESTPHAL

Dear Lindsay,
We apologize for this. Upon speaking with Michael (the reporter you spoke with), it is clear that the meaning of your quotes were changed in the editing process. His initial story is consistent with what you said. We will correct the story, both in print and online.
Best,
Colin Meyn

Previous posters making the suggestion that I am a "whoremonger" is offensive to me. The Soyra Mall just happened to be one of several places to eat and drink located not far from my hotel while I waited a few days for the Vietnam Visa and I did not frequent the Soyra Mall on a daily basis.

Appears the CD was a little too anxious to play the snide 'Cambodia retiree=expat whoremonger' angle and let it get away from them.
I see that they have made a correction to the online article and noted it properly. Still cached though.
I wonder how it can be corrected in print. Are they still printing old CDs, or they are going to go through their old stock and white it out, or what?CD EiC wrote:We will correct the story, both in print and online.

"CORRECTION Random guy is not a GSM whoremonger planning to retire in Cambodia. We accidentally changed the meaning of the quotes and lied as part of our editing process because we were too eager to push our agenda."

CD trying to brush themselves clean again. As if they haven't ever. I guess they inherited the holier than thou attitude from the UNTAC days. LTO should know. OP, she sounds a keeper. A real tiger!by LTO » Wed Oct 12, 2016 7:01 pm

The interesting point here is Colin Meyn's excuse about the meaning of his quotes being changed in the editing process. What is that all about?
The guy said he told the journalist that he had no interest in retiring to Cambodia and yet the article is published with the line that he is considering retiring to Cambodia. That's not editing; that's a complete change from what was said. Colin Meyn suggests the story as it was originally submitted was accurate, but editing changed it.
Editing didn't just change it; they totally fabricated stuff to suit the story they wanted to appear, complete with colourful and oh so slyly insinuating interjections that he was eating schnitzel. Fuck they might as well have said he was tattooed and wearing a wifebeater - it's the same impact.
OK, it's not Khmer Times plagiarism, but it's pretty shoddy journalism nonetheless.

Maybe she's planning to retire to PP in a couple of years, with a lump sum to set herself up with and half a police pension so she doesn't have to work. Maybe it came as a great shock that the husband was apparently thinking of doing the same.JimSocks wrote:Why you giving them your life story. Snd why your viet wife reading cambo daily

Is there such a thing as a GSM expat? Why do people even go there?
