Some badass looking security around Intercon this afternoon where he is staying. Cops/soldiers in full kit, wearing black masks, weapons in hand, standing smartly in short ranks along the street in front. Had to go through a metal detector and getting patted down to get to my afternoon espresso.
Thursday and Friday. A total of 7,000 police officers, military police and soldiers. The Cambodians must really hate the Chinese if they need that much security. Of course its to intimidate the public. Show of force.
I guess this guy has never been anywhere outside of Cambodia.“It is a historical visit from a power state, and the beauty along the streets has been improved – both the sidewalks and lighting along the streets have been prepared well,” Chanyada said, declining to comment further about the round-ups of people on the street.
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/s ... -day-visitA total of 7,000 police officers, military police and soldiers will be deployed on the streets of Phnom Penh today and Friday to provide security for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s two-day visit to the country, his first since becoming head of state, officials said.
The forces will include navy and air force members, and will ensure Xi’s safety as he meets Prime Minister Hun Sen and King Norodom Sihamoni, said National Police spokesman Kirth Chantharith.
“We have prepared all of the forces with attention, and we hope that there will be no problems until the delegation returns [to China] safely,” he said.
Phnom Penh City Hall spokesman Mean Chanyada said authorities had also once again been working at rounding up sex workers and homeless people from the streets in order to make the city look good for Xi.
“It is a historical visit from a power state, and the beauty along the streets has been improved – both the sidewalks and lighting along the streets have been prepared well,” Chanyada said, declining to comment further about the round-ups of people on the street.
I don't think it's because they fear any incident. I suspect it's more to grandstand to the new overlords. Look how important you are, they are saying. Thanks for making us extra rich without meddling in our politics like those saps from the west.
Rode into town yesterday around 4.30pm, no traffic problems at all, a few cops round Intercon, shops and businesses open as usual.

They are QBZ-97s. I don't know why they would have "Police" on them as only army units use them. They've been using the cases for around 3 years, probably to look less intimidating.newkidontheblock wrote:
And what's with the bodyguard troops wearing rifle cases around their body ? British ? AK rifles ? Bull pup. Stamped with 'Police' on them? Keep the dust off? Intimidate the CNRP?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I like to think that the cases only have a green mango, their smartphone and a copy of Razzle in there.Lucky Lucan wrote:They are QBZ-97s. I understand that you merged threads, but you changed it from "Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit" to "When is the Chinese premier arriving?", even though we've been discussing this topic for a few days. Why don't you keep the original thread title when merging?
