On the subject of being "officially banned from returning", the Rain Man seemed to have joined the club:LTO wrote:There is is difference between being officially banned and being afraid to come back because something might happen to him, even if It is wise for him to be afraid. So he is not barred from returning then?shitegeist wrote:Personally I would value the safety of my family over that. As I've said before -- and as Nate reaffirmed in the video -- Cambodians have the government they deserve.
Dumb move by HE, legitimizing Rainsy's claims of exile. Not quite the chessmaster he used to be.Judge wrote:On the subject of being "officially banned from returning", the Rain Man seemed to have joined the club:

Of course he is LTO, don't be daft. You of course recognise the difference between what's official and what's "official", as Felgerkarb alluded to above. I'd rate the chances of him landing on a morning plane at PNH and making it to eggs benedict at Metro as being pretty low.LTO wrote:So he is not barred from returning then?shitegeist wrote:Personally I would value the safety of my family over that. None, as far as I know of, although I know of at least one or two who thought it might be best to move on.LTO wrote:Hmmm. How many fireign jounalists have been assassinated here, or even arresred and expelled?
On the other hand I'd be genuinely curious to know of any foreign journalist -- or indeed, any high-profile local or foreigner of any profession -- who's made those kind of comments as we saw in the video and dared to set foot here without consequence.
Edit: grammar

Those comments weren't all that provocative, IMO. Colin Meyn and Mike Hayes have caused the government infinitely more embarrassment and grief over much more specific things than his general comments about Cambodian leadership in that vid.
I just watched the 5min of so and I agree, not at all impressed with his commentary and calling HE names.LTO wrote:Those comments weren't all that provocative, IMO. In my opinion, his assessment is very remote from the realities on the ground. He obviously only knows what everybody else knows from what get published and international coverage. He has no ideas of the more invisible intricacies in the current leadership and government.
And he's giving such broad sweeping assessment of Cambodians, that it's obvious the man is out of touch with the country.

I am not so sure. Nobody seems to care about Rainman anymore. His tactics failed and his supporters don't like him very much. Stick a fork in 'em.LTO wrote:So he is not barred from returning then?shitegeist wrote:Personally I would value the safety of my family over that. He's threatened a few. There was also that Canadian guy in Siem Reap that left his hotel room in the morning and was found murdered in a symbolic ritualistic entrance of Angkor Wat. Unless you believe the trees really stole his air.LTO wrote:Hmmm. How many foreign jounalists have been assassinated here, or even arrested and expelled?
Cambodia is indeed a dirty little country of 15 mil, that no one cares about except to make money from. Including its leaders. Someone was asking why the West keeps investing here - to make money of course. Or don't you know the aid game? Every dollar the US gives, it gets aprox 1.3 dollars back. Well, somebody's got to show them how to do it, and experts (lol) don't come cheap.
Speaking, as he seems to do, of Cambodia as a whole, I have met people on occasion who I would not categorize as "playing the game", but what real choice do they have of behaving any different? What real choice does anyone ever have, anywhere? There have always been dissenters of the status quo. Plato writes about them in the Republic over 2000 years ago, when things were a lot smaller and immensely freer in some ways.

I think maybe we can agree to disagree on that. Colin and Mike and various others have intelligently and insightfully ripped apart various parts of the government and written some nice pieces... where officials are "too busy" to comment or or said "ask the other guy" or give unintelligible answers and that's where it ended. It seems scandalous to us but actually no-one cares. I think there is a kind of space here in which criticism from white people is accepted and tolerated because it's profitable and politically expedient to do so in order to keep the peace.LTO wrote:Those comments weren't all that provocative, IMO. Nate is way, way off the reservation here, and good on him.
Calling HE an a-hole is one thing. Calling him out as a murderer is another.

And there, you see, is the rub: the guy can speak the truth because he's never coming back to Cambodia and he knows it.Edwardo wrote:Calling HE an a-hole is one thing. Calling him out as a murderer is another.
You see truth, I see hot air bravado. These are just words that don't convince anyone and don't contribute a dime to change within the country.
