What's with Tunisia?

some tempting numbers and the Mediterranean is very nice but not recommended for travel
similarly for Algeria...
Back in the mid '90s I spent a very pleasant two and a half months in Tunisia - with a small side trip into Libya
Friendly people, cafés were everywhere with decent coffee, water-pipes and chessboards, food was very good (and cheap). The 'tourist zones' were authorised to sell alcohol - which was not cheap, but was still cheaper than London at the time.
My local casino, 75 yards from the hotel I was at for half the time, gave free booze to anyone gambling - along with canapés. If I recall correctly, my annual membership at the casino cost me US$1 per month.
Shame that the country seems to have taken a turn for the worse in the meantime.
Based out on the Isle of Djerba, I hired a moto and explored all the nearby mainland, before taking a flight up to Tunis for two weeks, then returned to Djerba for the last two weeks of the trip.
