How i see it its how they prioritise their money, their gold is their bank, they might have nice phones and a bike, but how much do they actually have in the bank? Just because you have a new phone and bike doesn't make you rich, they probably live in an $80 per month or less room and eat cheap local food etc...
I cant say i agree with the rural areas observation either tbh

What are the secrets to this easy living? I wanna a piece of it too. Any pointer?
Maybe CEO members had a fund-raising campaign for them.
I won't be donating to any CEO-style whip-around for flying chicken, but I'd be willing to give some money to a genuine charity that hands out shoes and clothes and food to the poor without taking a large cut to cover their own salaries, flats and their SUV budgets or only hands out donated items in return for some religious service attendance. And (as a white male) you definitely don't want to go around handing out gifts to poor parents or street children yourself. So who is doing the good work out there?Kachang wrote: The children of the lady living behind my house don't go to school, walk around the house barefoot wearing tatters everyday, and last week their dog was stolen (probably by someone looking for some meat to sell). I think they live of 20k riel a day provided by her oldest sun working in a rubber plantation.
Yes, some Cambodians are just dirt poor.

You could always donate a large sum to a pagoda, like that guy did at the end of City of Ghosts. Just hope they don't spend it on mobile phones and ice.Edwardo wrote:I won't be donating to any CEO-style whip-around for flying chicken, but I'd be willing to give some money to a genuine charity that hands out shoes and clothes and food to the poor without taking a large cut to cover their own salaries, flats and their SUV budgets or only hands out donated items in return for some religious service attendance. Not a fan of the donor sector in Cambodia in general, as most have well passed their sell-by date ("Let's finance a 'gender equality in bamboo co-operatives' Project because eh, well we have nothing else to finance" etc etc), but people in the donor sector who do a good job have as much right to be well paid as anyone else - and it's not like the CEO of Coke or Krispy Kreme or whatever is improving the well-being of mankind. Also you don't have to be a bleeding-heart luuvie to work in the sector - better someone who treats it as 'just another job' but does it well nevertheless (and is paid accordingly), than someone who wants to save all cute brown-skinned people but is fucking useless and actually causes social damage (cue most NGOs still in Cambodia) no matter how little they are paid and how many kms they cycle to work every morning on their James Joyce-style 5nd-hand bicycles, pretending they are back in Saigon in the 1920s.Edwardo wrote:I won't be donating to any CEO-style whip-around for flying chicken, but I'd be willing to give some money to a genuine charity that hands out shoes and clothes and food to the poor without taking a large cut to cover their own salaries, flats and their SUV budgets or only hands out donated items in return for some religious service attendance. BTW - some religious-based organisations (not the loony Korean type, I imagine) do very good work here.

Microfinance loans, and unofficial loans (as in moneylenders) are extremely common in Cambodia, and the interest rates are extortionate. It's basically just usury, and people end up trapped. Banks here will only give out loans if you put your property up as collateral. You have a whole lot of people who are not all that clued up on maths etc, and they get fucked over big time.upstage wrote:
Back to topic, bank loans. What else? It's what westerners do, living on credit for decades, now it's time for third world to get access to consumerism.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

75% of the youth in pp comes grom provinces, in province the parents owns riceland, and khmers are very good to save money. Parents lives in old housrs, but every year they get several thousands $ for their riceproduction. And that money they send to their children in pp. And they go buy iphone 7 and honda dream 2016.
And ibdeed, khmers like to borrow money and buy things for show.

1 standard cow = 1 iphone + some change/ 75% of a new zoomer/msx/scoopy etc.
1 large ox = 30-50% of a 2nd hand camry
How many cows does one see in the provinces?*
*a shit tonne.

Then you can donate to them. I'll not give to religion-based organisations that require any religious service atttendance or religious education as a condition of giving aid. And as stated, my preference is for a locally founded charitable group run by Khmers. You don't have to agree with my conditions.RBD wrote:BTW - some religious-based organisations (not the loony Korean type, I imagine) do very good work here.
