"I don't care what the people are thinking, i ain't drunk i'm just drinking"
Getting anyone to do agricultural (or indeed any) work isn't easy either. $5 for a couple of hours killing birds or $15 a day for rice field work. yeah it's not glamorous, but how much does a teacher or factory worker make again? Then plead poverty.
Always enough for another slab of beer too, I notice. Just another of Cambodia's mysteries.

America gives cambodia 600 million USD a year on top of 5.5 billion in the 2000s.
still they wanna have more.
still they wanna have more.
Those sleek bastards that make me writhe.
I couldn't give a F how materialistic they are, or what the dumb f's spend their money on. Just let them give some of it for health and education first.

http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2732.htmIn 2014, U.S. foreign assistance for programs in health, education, governance, economic growth, and demining of unexploded ordnance totaled over $77.6 million.
The $5.5 billion was all international aid, the US contribution was only a fraction of that.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
He might have been talking Western Union etc. I believe that is quite a sizable amount.Lucky Lucan wrote:BS, for example:whiskyfrommekong wrote:America gives cambodia 600 million USD a year on top of 5.5 billion in the 2000s.

5.5 billion is only from 1998 till 2008 from foreign aid ten percent toward NGOs.
Firstly, you don't see excessive amounts of this stuff in the provinces, it's mostly confined to PP, SR and KS.
Most of the Zoomers you see are 2014, they cost $1200, and you spend about another $200 making it look like the current model. For the MSX there's an easy way to tell; previous versions had the exhaust going up near the seat, the newest has it by your foot. You'll see a lot of people riding around with bodywork and lights from the new model, but the exhaust gives it away
The vast majority of motos (including Zoomer) that you see aren't new even when they look new. They are used motos imported from Thailand and refurbished to look "99% new" (as most of the adverts for them put it). They also modify older models to look like newer models, which is a very popular thing to do here. Every time a new model is released, within weeks the shops around Orussey market have bodykits, decals, and light fittings to make the old version look like the new version.phat kunthea wrote:Why do I always see..

This comes from 2 things. The first is how much they prioritize having a car above almost anything else. It's not at all uncommon for Khmers to have a car that costs more than the apartment/house they live in. It clearly doesn't make financial sense, but it is what it is. The other factor is credit. It's very easy to get car loans here now and credit is still a new enough thing here that a lot of locals just see it as free money, without taking the long term consequences into account. For reference; payments on a new Fortuner work out at about $740 per month. You don't have to be super rich to afford that, though clearly you aren't going to cover it just by farming rice.- Rang rovers and cars cars cars
Ya, I got nothing for that one....-smart phones 2015-2016 versions
Eating out doesn't cost much more than eating at home, in some cases it can actually be cheaper.-eat out everyday and dont even work
For a lot of them, their jewelry IS their bank account. It's how they store their wealth. Weird and dumb but whatever, up to them.-jewelries not just on their fingers and neck, but on their ankles and toes
If Khmers are poor why isn't every Khmer?
Maybe not every Khmer is the same? Who knows, maybe they are individual people or something.
Bless

Alright Bubblet, appreciate the honest response.

My neighbor just died, age 48. Died of an unknown disease, but he suffered from an ascites for some days, so I was told (I was in Phnom Penh at the time), before dying. He did not have enough money to see a decent doctor, so he simply died.phat kunthea wrote:Why do I always see..

The children of the lady living behind my house don't go to school, walk around the house barefoot wearing tatters everyday, and last week their dog was stolen (probably by someone looking for some meat to sell). I think they live of 20k riel a day provided by her oldest sun working in a rubber plantation.
Yes, some Cambodians are just dirt poor.
On the other hand there's loads of Cambodians around here too having more in the bank than I do.

BubbleT, please share where you can buy a year 2014 Zoomer for 1400$
Thanks
Back to topic, bank loans. What else? It's what westerners do, living on credit for decades, now it's time for third world to get access to consumerism.
