Reporting from the western world.
Corruption is far more endemic in the west than here.
pew, pew, pew, pew!
Nice summary. Some of those points could be debated, but in comparison with Cambodia they all come out solid gold.gavinmac wrote:Clean streets, great health care, low infant mortality, high wages, freedom of speech, democracy, safe and efficient public transport, lack of corruption, fast wifi, better infrastructure, hot water from the tap, opportunity and social mobility, dishwashers, free high quality public schools, welfare benefits, disability benefits, pensions/social security, anti-discrimination laws, effective policing, the ability to get rich through hard work, effective and honest court systems, longer life expectancy, and affordable used Toyota Camrys.
Oh come on. You know his routine. He will go back to Cambodia, says its the best place in the world for the first day and then get angry with it a week later and leave, saying everyone but him is an idiot.gavinmac wrote:Oh, please. People in the west have manners, but they also have shit to do. But if you prefer to to give up all the advantages of the Western world so you can hang out in the Cambodian provinces with shirtless, undereducated "mellow" Khmer dudes who do nothing but stare and smile all day (because there are no jobs and nothing else to do) then knock yourself out.whiskyfrommekong wrote: the people here in the west have attitudes.
the mellow friendlinest of cambos make it worth while. (one of the last places).

three necessary things that dont exist in the western world and three thing most dont have in the west.
If it is that good, why is then population drugging, drinking, shopping, watching TV non stop (all denial activities)... and why are some running to third world countries and have a sigh of relief... and why then, after having spent some time in either 'paradise' - they see there is none. Nowhere to be seen.gavinmac wrote:Clean streets, great health care, low infant mortality, high wages, freedom of speech, democracy, safe and efficient public transport, lack of corruption, fast wifi, better infrastructure, hot water from the tap, opportunity and social mobility, dishwashers, free high quality public schools, welfare benefits, disability benefits, pensions/social security, anti-discrimination laws, effective policing, the ability to get rich through hard work, effective and honest court systems, longer life expectancy, and affordable used Toyota Camrys.
Cambodians see the veneer, the facade presented by Western world. They are not worldly enough to think for themselves.
My prediction is that in, say, ten years or so - there will be a backlash against foreigners and Western values. Don't get me wrong - clean efficient facilities are a plus. But a clean cage is still a cage.

Cambodia is not 'great' for those who hail from Cambodia, in the same way as, say, the US is not great for those who hail from the US. People just learn there is nowhere to run.

One thing I enjoy getting away from here is the perpetual bombarding by the media trying to tell me how I should think. It's one of the great benefits of not knowing the language in the country your living. As soon as your able to talk politics in a local language, it's the end of the honeymoon period.
I think what the OP is searching for is either unknown to him or existed 10 to 15 years ago.
People like Jamie have the right idea nowadays afaic. They spend as much time as they can out of their home country, but still go back and earn money, pay taxes and have resident status which allows them to continue to receive the benefits as outlined by GavinMac whilst also enjoying the freedom from the mind beating of the UK. The best of both worlds.
I remember speaking to a South African guy (black) many years ago during apartheid. He was living in London but was determined to go back to SA. I said I was surprised as don't they beat you just for being black there? He replied - yes they do physically, but bones mend. In the UK they beat you mentally.

Jamie doesn't pay taxes. And he shouldn't. Neither should you. Be like Jamie.

Are we talking Trainspotting here? If so, compare the two destitutes in Cambodia or the UK.spitthedog wrote:Sounds like the sort of stuff that pushed Renton into drugs.gavinmac wrote:Clean streets, great health care, low infant mortality, high wages, freedom of speech, democracy, safe and efficient public transport, lack of corruption, fast wifi, better infrastructure, hot water from the tap, opportunity and social mobility, dishwashers, free high quality public schools, welfare benefits, disability benefits, pensions/social security, anti-discrimination laws, effective policing, the ability to get rich through hard work, effective and honest court systems, longer life expectancy, and affordable used Toyota Camrys.
