Have yet to hear people that I know got their lives threatened by others on the road. Maybe NKOB's sexy nurse is unique.
But there are certainly many people who lacked the road etiquette. People who can barely drive talking on the phone or checking their Facebook while driving. Driving in the middle of the lane. Riding their motorbikes side by side in 2 or 3 on congested road. Traffic cops hiding behind trees and cars....

You're actually from Montana?texansteak wrote:I'm not sure if its Khmers getting more rude or perhaps we as expats are getting less tolerant. I think the city is changing very quickly - its becoming so fast paced. Reminds me of my home State back in the US.

I'm always confused. Is NKOTB flying chicken or is it phatkunt?
Anyways, to answer the question:
1-Yes, Khmers are getting much ruder. That happens in all urbanizing countries, especially with the richer segment.
2-Your wife was probably taking up a lot of space as LL says. I've honked at motos who can't squeeze between two cars, while for some magical reason I can despite my handlebars being 25cm wider. What's even more annoying though is when I get to the front of a lineup at a red light, then some slow female student on her chaly squeezes to the front and stops in front of me. Fuckers, if I'm at the front, you can be sure I'll be squeezing that throttle the whole way 3 secs before the light turns green. Those who get in front always seem to be old motodops, grannies and young women who start driving 5 seconds after the lights have turned and then let their legs dangle off the side of the bike for the first 20m as if it was their first time on a bike. Why did you go to the front of your going to drive like a blind 80 year old?! Fuck...
Equally bad are the fucking tuktuks and three-wheelers who insist on blocking up a passage. Fucker, you know you won't be able to squeeze in that 60cm gap, so why are you trying? You're blocking the rest of her on bikes who could easily get to the front. Faaaark.

The most annoying people on the road are those who count how many centimeters a handlebar is when waiting at a red light. We're talking meters here even if you can squeeze in, maximum. You can be in the vehicle behind you and it won't make a noticable difference. Chill the fuck out and the world will be a better place.

No, it makes a difference when buddy who's afraid of going between two motionless cars still actually blocks the opening and stays there (or a tuktuk blocks it instead of staying behind the cars). I'm not talking about at the intersection either, but like 75m back. Those of us who have spatial awareness (or are capable of the simple "left-right" handlebar manoeuvre) would be at the front by now. If you're slow, don't block the road and if you're at the front, fucking throttle up/floor it when it's green instead of checking Facebook.

Oh, and anyone else notice that Khmers somehow obey all traffic laws when there's no traffic? On Saturday mornings I'll drive up to an intersection and everyone is motionless, patiently waiting for the green when there's zero traffic going the other way. I do a quick left-right-left and go through the deserted street. Fast forward to Wednesday at 6pm and suddenly lights don't exist anymore and everyone wants to be first. Late evenings are different though. Just a funny observation of human behaviour.
100 meters going at say 40 km/h (to be generous in your favour), what we're talking 10 seconds? How's your blood pressure? Does your very important schedule not allow 10 second delays? Maybe you should set your alarm 5 minutes earlier and then you wouldn't need to stress so much on your daily commute.

I think GM'S previous comment sums up why the locals are cowed by death threats so easily. This is the land where the mighty and powerful really do have the ability to carry out such actions with relative impunity. Sad, unfortunately.TristranandIsolde wrote:The "Kill you and your family" threat is pretty good here, used mostly when the speaker is impatient.
It cows many. They also have long, vengeful memories.
Please, treat the locals right, don't let them be contemptuous of you, or it will one day turn into Thailand ...
Don't worry, be happy.

'Go and die' or just 'die' is the Khmer rough equivalent of eff off.
It's used all the time in frustration/anger.
How many words are there for kill. Nothing new really. How many times have you heard a granny say 'fuck me in the ass'. They talk earthy here.
