Can we form a Caravelle Party now, like they did in HCMC? Would still be a great party

It will be exactly the same. Bars will have closed. Expats will have died or moved on. But no major change. Still stupid shit and moronicness.
Hopefully, the average Cambodian will have better English grammar than the OP.

Samdech Manet will be doing a sterling job.

I can't believe you have posted that. Do you know what a park is? Ever been to Lumpini park? Hyde Park? Central Park? Any park bigger than a door-mat, with trees and not full of concrete? Ever seen the people along Russian Bld trying to playing games at 5pm in the park outside that Chinese monstrosity? It's really sad.Alexandra wrote:The 68 parks we have are either full of undesirables or empty. Do you think a larger park would attract different people? Why?

None of them would deserve to be called as such in any decent capital city.Alexandra wrote:There are 68 parks in Phnom Penh.RBD wrote:at least one park (think of a Lumpini Park) would have been beneficial to the city's inhabitants

I actually can't even think of one that can compare favorably to a standard Paris local neighborhood square, absolute disgrace.
Apart from the obvious lapse in good ethical NGO rhetoric by using the word "undesirables" (your not that certain red-head are you?) I want to know how she knows there are 68 parks. Did she count them herself or is she Lucky's new bit on the side?
Olympic Stadium is nearby. Is it over crowded? Or why don't they go to Wat Phnom or something? Maybe because of the undesirables.RBD wrote:Ever seen the people along Russian Bld trying to playing games at 5pm in the park outside that Chinese monstrosity? It's really sad.
Phnom Penh Municipal Hall said there are 68 parks in a recent statement. If you know better feel free to contact the Municipal Gardens Office I suppose.Abou-Gor wrote:Apart from the obvious lapse in good ethical NGO rhetoric by using the word "undesirables" (your not that certain red-head are you?) ^ Believes everything she reads.
I think they go because they are proud of those new road islands. Especially the one's overlooking the ministry of fear and ministry of information. There are enough aerobicists, smoochers and sellers to shoo away the extremely poor / land evictees, wherever they go surely?
Although, when I describe to my Khmer students what westerners consider a park to be - A quiet green place, covered with mature shade-giving trees, plants, flowers and a large pond with a fountain; somewhere a bit cooler to go and get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city at lunch time etc; a small piece of the countryside in the city; and all for free , I do see a glimmer of something that may resemble regret in their eyes.

The source (City Hall) was good enough for The Phnom Penh Post to publish the same number 11 days earlier:

http://www.phnompenhpost.com/post-prope ... -uncoveredKnown to be a popular jogging route and general exercising spot for locals and tourists alike, the park is located on the eastern side of Wat Botum, south of the Royal Palace. It is one of the 68 parks in Phnom Penh earmarked for renovations as part of City Hall’s efforts to construct more tourist attractions, according to City Hall spokesman, Chen Bunthoern.
At least I read. Let's hear it then, Mr. know it all. How many parks are there in Phnom Penh?Abou-Gor wrote:^ Believes everything she reads.

Well, there's that one on the corner of Kamuchea Krom and Czech Republic Boulevard

But they are tiny and far too close to the traffic.
"fold for sheep," seems quite apt.
There are still quite a few large lake/ ponds scattered around Russeo Keo that could easily and cheaply be developed, but they are hardly central.
Here's one example which I have chilled out at -

definitely undesirables hanging around there though lol But they were very friendly, gave me a hammock and a beer and some grub- shared my smokes with them.

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=parkpark (n.) Look up park at Dictionary.com
mid-13c., "enclosed preserve for beasts of the chase," from Old French parc "enclosed wood or heath land used as a game preserve" (12c.), probably ultimately from West Germanic *parruk "enclosed tract of land" (source also of Old English pearruc, root of paddock (n.2), Old High German pfarrih "fencing about, enclosure," German pferch "fold for sheep," Dutch park).
Internal evidence suggests the West Germanic word is pre-4c. and originally meant the fencing, not the place enclosed. Found also in Medieval Latin as parricus "enclosure, park" (8c.), which likely is the direct source of the Old French word, as well as Italian parco, Spanish parque, etc. Some claim the Medieval Latin word as the source of the West Germanic, but the reverse seems more likely. Some later senses in English represent later borrowings from French. OED discounts notion of a Celtic origin. Welsh parc, Gaelic pairc are from English.
Meaning "enclosed lot in or near a town, for public recreation" is first attested 1660s, originally in reference to London; the sense evolution is via royal parks in the original, hunting sense being overrun by the growth of London and being opened to the public. Applied to sporting fields in American English from 1867.
"fold for sheep," seems quite apt.
