Khmers helping poor Westerners and taking video of it and putting it on Facebook
I've seen two such videos in the last week.
Here's one that seems to show Khmers feeding rice to a down and out Englishman.
And here are Khmers giving cash to a German guy on a bus who "lost his passport":
Of course, back in June we had the video of a Khmer singer giving cash to Belgian Xavier the Scammer because he had "lost his wallet."
Khmers just love posting this stuff on Facebook.

I say let's applaud the action of helping rather than mock the publicity.
We're very quick to highlight negative traits so this should be a refreshing change.

Big cultural difference and it's special because the afflicted are from the normally economic upper class, quite unusual for the masses here, most of whom have never stepped foot outside of Cambodia.
It might be like looking at a New Yorker who has been bankrupt multiple times begging on the street ... Surpising and noteworthy.
I'm very interested in discussion and relative "point values" for their various PUBLIC acts of decency. How much "karma" or "merit" for helping a wayfaring traveler? How much for helping grandma? How much for planting little saplings?
Usually well-intentioned, with a dash of self-serving mixed in. Education level and age of the "donor?"
Of course, occasionally someone tries to score fame points out of it. Kind of juvenile. I wouldn't get all excited about it, unless you are a Trump follower and lament the fall of the lower- to middle-class majority in America ...
Self <-- Not a 'Murican ... More a Californian and Hawaiian ... FYI

Well that doesn't necessarily mean they're feral. That note change fiasco has been a total mess, and most places in India don't take credit cards, so it's a nightmare for half the population. That said, I'm sure the busking didn't need to happen.ricecakes wrote:and i believe in India the feral westerners are now having to busk as they have no cash after the money was taken out of circulation...

Only the criminal, non-tax paying are complaining (the large part of the population)?
All legitimate tax payers are good? The rest do not contribute and only clog up the roads and suck up the good air of tax-paying people in India?
Wonder which provinces are hit the most. Bold move to reign in lawlessness. Quite a gambit!
When they took away the guns here, was it pandemonium for a while? 2002-2005.
Maybe the international banks were threatening Modi with a devaluation of the rupee anyways, given so many counterfeiters?
Just playing the Advocate, haha.

Au contriare, Monsieur Coreen. 90% of the people Modi said it would affect - crime lords, tax evaders and money launderers - are far too smart to keep their wealth in rupees, instead having it in USD, GBP, Euro, gold, etc, and the few that would have containers full of rupees would simply pay their minions to change it all into the new denominations. In terms of who this actually affects, of how many rural Cambodians have bank accounts, multiply it by a billion, and there's your answer. Some Farmers in India probably have 10,000 rupees as their life savings, and live 5 hours from the nearest bank, so don't have the time to go and get it changed. Some probably don't even know how to change it. Modi is risking pissing off his core support base with this ridiculous move. Plus, did anyone notice he rolled it out on the day of the US election in order to avoid international scrutiny?TristranandIsolde wrote:Only the criminal, non-tax paying are complaining (the large part of the population)?

Someone helping a foreigner is eroding respect for foreigners?JimSocks wrote:its a face thing. they want to look good for their facebook friends. oh look, i'm rich enough to help a poor foreigner. its these types of things that are slowly eroding the respect given to foreigners.
Huh?
Maybe seeing an increasing number of foreigners on their arses at the side of roads. Or seeing the behaviour of those with drink/drug issues maybe the reason for the erosion of respect that you think is happening.
Earn respect man - don't expect people just to respect you because of your nationality.

Some of the most visible are pathetic foreigners that can only be pitied, and surely deserve no respect.JimSocks wrote:its a face thing. they want to look good for their facebook friends. oh look, i'm rich enough to help a poor foreigner. its these types of things that are slowly eroding the respect given to foreigners.
The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Absolute garbage. Some of the most visible? Foreign beggars/beggars/homeless/scammers/druggies are posted about here because they are exceptions rather than the norm. If they were the norm then no one would be interested.PorkPiePorn wrote:Some of the most visible are pathetic foreigners that can only be pitied, and surely deserve no respect.JimSocks wrote:its a face thing. they want to look good for their facebook friends. oh look, i'm rich enough to help a poor foreigner. its these types of things that are slowly eroding the respect given to foreigners.
Most foreigners here in Cambodia are fine, they are respectful and cause no problems. A significant number do good. Some are high profile and very visible.
A very small number are pathetic but you are noticing these and not noticing the much larger group who are either neutral or bringing benefit.
This is classic perception bias.
Some thoughts;
How long before they start getting them to fight for cash?
Would 440 actively support the videos to be shown on its forum?
