That looks like an interesting article (I only skimmed through) but it has a whiff of White Savior complex-afflicted sensationalism that plays for a White audience.
I'm not including the family in the above. It's admirable they chose this livelihood.
Just that the article's focus in the title on a White family saving a Cambodian forest takes away from the locals in my opinion.
I guess for an audience in the West, it's a noteworthy story of sacrifice.
For a domestic audience, that has too much of a White Savior vibe to it.

I can't quite connect all the dots to add up to "risking it all"?

First of all my respect to this foreigner for risking his life and his family to do this. His last lifeline is problably because he got a lot of media attention and maybe embassy involved.. or who knows who is involved on the back ground..
All remember the cambodian speaking Spanish guy? luckily he had a lot of media attention so they could not make him disapear.. so they decided to make him "Persona non grata" and kicked him out of the country.
but please wake up people you see those rangers on the picture? Those are a perfect example! PUPPETS IS WHAT THEY ARE.
if you haven't been to the area and still in doubt, rent a cross moto and do a tour and some camping. if you are there long enough you will see plenty of trucks full of wood and big tuk tuk type vehicles full of wood leaving the forrests. locals with professional tools while their moto is barely driveable. Imagine if you would have the power to stop them than still you can't, they will have an excuse for everything and every occasion.
Those Rangers come on.. you can simply see it by how their expression is and their state of body. slim (no beer and karaoke) and ZERO authority. They have nothing to say. The rangers might be great people and really try what they can, but they simply can not much.. And most importantly they will say nothing once Mr Okna shows up with his brand new LX 570, (complete with the blue red army licence plates)
*Edit: when you do a tour around north cambodia you will see all the woodshops on the side of the road, show them a picture of the rosewood and they either have it in stock, or can easily get it on order! I tried this 1 time and first shop was BINGO!! but probably after they read this post it might become more difficult for a foreigner to ask for it lol
By the way have you wood lovers been to the new Sagnam Casino hotel yet? Ask to stay in the presidential suite, its wood from ceiling to bed, to walls to floor!!

You don't see the danger in walking around Cambodian jungles looking for illegal poachers and loggers with the intention of confiscating their guns? Really?salvajeuno wrote:I can't quite connect all the dots to add up to "risking it all"?

A building I used to live in, my neighbor is a forestry boss, he gets the peasant people to do all the dirty works on the Khmer/Thai borders, he changes brand new car literally every month, his man purse carries no less than 100k USD in cash, his car trunks are full of semi-auto guns. Whenever he invited us out, you can order whatever you can name. He is a cool guy in a way, but also think he has a lot of blood in his hands.
Truth is there isnt much you can do about deforestation in Cambodia, the authorities are well connected to the higher ups...who cares anyway, nearly 80% of Cambodian forests are already depleted. Being a drug lord is the next best gig.
