RIP LTO
This is awful. I didn't know him in real life, but I always admired him on here and enjoyed his posts.
Damn. Thoughts are with his family.

I have unfortunatley anounced many deaths here including KIR. Never once have my sources been wrong.giblet wrote:Are you sure? I don't want this to be true.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
This really sucks, as has 2016 generally. John, do you know where this happened? I've never seen fast enough currents to be a danger here in Phnom Penh, so I assume it was elsewhere.
I never met him in real life but he was easily one of the best and most informed posters on K440. Condolences to his friends and family. RIP

Damn shame. I didn't know him IRL but he was a great poster and I have no doubt he was a fine man. RIP.
\Hard to believe and it hasn't sunk yet. I met him a few times over the years and he was as charming and interesting IRL as online, One of the founding fathers of the pp expat community has gone and that is very sad news.
My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

The victim was un-boarding the Cambo Cruise tourist boat when the incident happened.
According to a female friend:
The victim didn't drink any alcohol at all and fell into the water because the rain made the gangway slippery. http://www.koonkhmer.com/forum/viewtopi ... 458#p10458
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

LTO was a fount of wisdom and knowledge about Cambodia, scrupulously ethical, strongly opinionated yet able to maintain objective and able to appreciate others' points of view and change his ideas when a strong case was made. In person he was friendly, intelligent, funny and easy to get along with. He had an ability to appreciate and understand nuanced and complicated issues and always managed to bring his unique perspective to them and argue with passion but without malice. I truly regret having only really conversed with him at length just the once, at one of the Garage K440 meetups once upon a time. I can't imagine how awful this is for his family and hope that arrangements are in place to have them taken care of into the future.
I've always said that living in Southeast Asia takes around 20 years of life from one's average lifespan. If you don't succumb to the temptations or road carnage, you're always at higher risk for the simplest of reasons, from poor infrastructure to ill-equipped and staffed hospitals. LTO is just one more example, but a particularly germane one as he had practically none of the major "risk" factors that I was aware of. Please be careful out there and make sure you've got your ducks lined up for your families in the sad and likely event that this happens to you and your life ends long before it should.
This is just so tragic. 2016 has been perhaps the shittiest year ever from my point of view. It's almost like many of the better people I've known have decided about the earth that "well, this place is fucked, I'm outta here before it gets worse." Just depressing.
Ave LTO. You were a good man.

I'm lost for words. I can only think "Not LTO."
That fucking sucks. I don't want this to be true.
Thoughts and prayers for his family... RIP LTO, you were one of the greatest guys.

I have to agree the "Changing of the Guard" has already begun. Also, the old Thai king has passed. The Chinese are now moving in. All the niceties of a small town capital is changing into a cement, glass and steel city.
Still nice pockets of humanity here and there, but the KTVs are popping up, and businesses are starting to fail. Familiar businesses are on the market for sale. People are getting old or tired. Put on your winter coats!
The hipsters are moving in ... :p
It's been a known fact for a while, the nice guys get taken down early in Cambodia. It's surprising LTO lasted so long, being such a good guy.
Oh, yeah, I'm heavy, so I get good grips put on the soles of my shoes, especially during rainy season, and every now and again, I get back into the gym to maintain my agility. Easy to get complacent out here.
Only the strong (and smart) survive in Cambodia.
