Were you a long time expat (over the initial year) making renewals online at the time of your claim? Or were you going back and forth between your home country every year. I think your right that Nomad depends on what they consider as place of residence. Here is what they put on their site about it;PorkPiePorn wrote:World nomads is great for initial insurance, up to one year, and also if you are back and forth. Technically then, you are not ex-pat, you're a traveler. I made a claim once, it was a bit of back and forth to make sure I was covered before they rolled out the red carpet, but then, three days in the hospital, and no problems, even paid out of pocket to me direct afterwards.
It seems a bit contradictory.Cover is only available to:
British Citizens for a trip outside the United Kingdom. You may be currently in the United Kingdom, travelling outside the United Kingdom or residing in another country at the time the policy is purchased.
Or
a resident of the United Kingdom for a trip outside the United Kingdom. You must be residing in the United Kingdom and have unrestricted right of entry to the United Kingdom. If you are a resident travelling outside of the United Kingdom or living in another country, you cannot be covered under this policy.
You must be 64 years old or younger at the time you buy or extend this policy. Cover will not be issued once you have reached 65 years of age.

There are good and bad insurance companies worldwide.
I have been selling insurance for 35 years with 16 years in south East Asia.
Local companies are no doubt the worst for claims.
Good luck

hence this thread. I'm sure that Cambodia Connect has all the answers, but it will cost you. And even then - sounds to me a bit like trusting a barang second-hand car salesman in Cambodia.maxx wrote:theres only 1 measure of a good insurance co & thats if they pay your claim out, otherwise complete waste of mony
I think i'd rather just pop into the official office.

If you go back and forth and have a 'home' address, then you would take out a new world nomads insurance per trip. Say, 6 months at a time. Return to the west, and then before you fly over again, buy another term of travel insurance. I think it also hinges on your keeping your health care coverage/status in your home country.
Once you've already re-located and spent a year or more abroad, you cannot use it, or have fun making a claim I fear.
The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

He's straight as and has a range of policies.
You've taken his advice on a policy and made a successful claim on it?RobW wrote:Go with this guy.Cambodia_Connect wrote:There are good and bad insurance companies worldwide.

If so, can we get the annual fee you paid?, what company etc?
When I lived in Thailand I had a BUPA policy. Can't remember the premium but it was reasonable, covered in-patient and emergency, nothing for out-patient. Had cataract and back surgery that they paid. Now I use Veterans Administration health care (they get a bad rap, I am very satisfied with their care, and co-payments are very low) and buy an Allianz travel policy when overseas. About $3 dollars a day for full coverage with high limits and $500K in evacuation insurance.
If they have BUPA in Cambodia you should check it out.

If you don't know where you're going, any road takes you there.

I use William Russell, but Allianz is the actual insurer. Russell's customer service is very good.
Even though the healthcare here is dodgy, every expat should have some form of health insurance. I have a very high deductible so I haven't used it, but if something serious happens and I make it; the cost could be catastrophic out of pocket. Also, I knew a guy who got sick here in Cambodia and he had no money or insurance for treatment, he got some treatment at Cal, but for only so long and he couldn't afford more. The embassy wouldn't help and neither would any of the private hospitals so he finally passed away due to a lack of treatment. Don't be that guy.

Numbnuts all grown up
Touch wood, haven't needed to claim but I am happy with the policy.Abou-Gor wrote:You've taken his advice on a policy and made a successful claim on it?RobW wrote:Go with this guy.Cambodia_Connect wrote:There are good and bad insurance companies worldwide.

Can't remember how much but a fraction of the cost of getting fixed up when you get turned into Bolgnaise from the waist down.
Plus the shitty Royal PP Hospital will try to hold onto you claiming they can deal with it. . They can't.
Hopefully your friends will find you and get you sent to Sing.
As for company there are only really three in the world. All the little ones work for them in some way.
Edit: Bupa won't come out to play here.
It appears so.RobW wrote: Edit: Bupa won't come out to play here.
Bupa is the one I have now, but it's done by my employer.
