From my understanding, the contemporary Buddhism in Cambodia has become more of a cultural and tradition than the teachings itself. I.e. people go to the pagoda on special occasion because everyone does and so on.
Back to the topic, I think you might be the hero OP.
Human decency...what a joke.

People are also frightened to get the blame / mob's anger if they offer help and things turn bad. After all, if you step in and the victim dies, who's going to convince the crowd / angry mob and the relatives of the victim you tried the right thing, but somehow it did not work.JimSocks wrote:well, now that i think of it, things are slowly turning around. i mean, we hear stories about people chasing down thieves and hit and runnerrs all the time now. like the huawei guy who got caught because people chased him down. but the gore thing, i just think people just don't have the medical knowledge to help.
Personally I don't stop if an accident happened and I see a crowd / mob around the victim. First rule in first aid class is 'own safety first', never forget that rule, even though it gets a different meaning in Cambodia.

They're not Buddhists, their animists.boozyoldman wrote:Part of this gap-mouthed stupidity is due to the Buddhist fatalism than screws up people's heads here.
That, and the total absence of training in altruism and social responsibility.
Burmese are Buddhists.

Religion in Cambodia
Approximately 95% of Cambodia's population follows Theravada Buddhism, heavily influenced by Shaivism and Vaishnavism and by animism, with Islam, Christianity, and tribal animism making up the bulk of the remainder.

Seems to match your report.Chris K wrote:Most of us would grimace or flinch at the sight of a young khmer girl, unconscious and bleeding from massive head injuries, her arm twisted obviously broken and choking on her own blood. I came across the scene about half an hour ago....Independence monument and Norodom. There was a crowd of fifty plus, including all the BHQ guards that hang around there at night with their automatic weapons out of their cases.
I only stopped because they had her lying on her back with her feet on the gutter and it was obvious she was choking on her own blood. I turned her into the recovery position...her breathing was a little easier...one of her front teeth came out.
I've been here long enough to see some totally fucked up things...by Western standards. Nearly every one of these people took videos and photos of this girl...some of them putting their cameras right in her face while she is gurgling and trickling blood out of her mouth. Even her so called friends were clicking away. These BHQ guards...what a fucking joke those lot are....they allow it and take their own recordings as well. Ambulance arrives and they throw her on a stretcher like she is a piece of spaghetti. No examination of her at all...even after I pointed out her obvious broken arm and the fact that she was swallowing her own blood...they plonked her on her back on the stretcher.
A couple of things. These Khmers that record road accident victims. These people...these human beings...there is not a shred of decency amongst any of them.It was like I was amongst a group of excited hungry hyenas waiting for their share of the carcass. It made me sick to see no one doing anything to help this girl. It made me even sicker that they revel in what they are seeing...evidenced by all the cameras out.
The other thing I have been thinking about. Lord help us all if we ever have an accident in Cambodia, and our mates, partners, friends are not their to help us. What a horrible way to go....surrounded by fellow human beings doing nothng....but recording everything. I suspect that the videos were uploaded online somewhere before I got home...and I live 2min from the accident. Stay safe people.
Painful to watch critically injured people being stared at and filmed instead of helped. Once they're on the ground, it's like they're considered already dead.

Staring at and taking photos of the injured and dead in public places is rude but harmless. It's way, way down the list of terrible and indecent things that Cambodians do to each other.
