Human decency...what a joke.
Human decency...what a joke.
Most of us would grimace or flinch at the sight of a young khmer girl, unconscious and bleeding from massive head injuries, her arm twisted obviously broken and choking on her own blood. I came across the scene about half an hour ago....Independence monument and Norodom. There was a crowd of fifty plus, including all the BHQ guards that hang around there at night with their automatic weapons out of their cases.
I only stopped because they had her lying on her back with her feet on the gutter and it was obvious she was choking on her own blood. I turned her into the recovery position...her breathing was a little easier...one of her front teeth came out.
I've been here long enough to see some totally fucked up things...by Western standards. Nearly every one of these people took videos and photos of this girl...some of them putting their cameras right in her face while she is gurgling and trickling blood out of her mouth. Even her so called friends were clicking away. These BHQ guards...what a fucking joke those lot are....they allow it and take their own recordings as well. Ambulance arrives and they throw her on a stretcher like she is a piece of spaghetti. No examination of her at all...even after I pointed out her obvious broken arm and the fact that she was swallowing her own blood...they plonked her on her back on the stretcher.
A couple of things. These Khmers that record road accident victims. These people...these human beings...there is not a shred of decency amongst any of them.It was like I was amongst a group of excited hungry hyenas waiting for their share of the carcass. It made me sick to see no one doing anything to help this girl. It made me even sicker that they revel in what they are seeing...evidenced by all the cameras out.
The other thing I have been thinking about. Lord help us all if we ever have an accident in Cambodia, and our mates, partners, friends are not their to help us. What a horrible way to go....surrounded by fellow human beings doing nothng....but recording everything. I suspect that the videos were uploaded online somewhere before I got home...and I live 2min from the accident. Stay safe people.

OP you did a good thing.
Have seen Khmers taking photos of the dead previously, including cops taking snapshots with people posed next to the body. Or even an accident victim taking a picture of a fellow accident victim. It's weird but doesn't seem to strike Cambodians as such.
Someone should look into writing a book about it. There's such a disconnect between the pain and suffering of others here. Whether that's the result of growing up in a traumatized society or what who knows.

if not a book at least an essay...i'd say there's a few factors at play for what is too often very much the norm...it's probably easy to characterise it as a kind of moral shortcoming when in fact it's likely more complex than that...should look into writing a book about it
I think the topic has come up a couple of times in the past...

Let's hope the poor girl somehow survives and recovers from her trauma.

Well done for stopping and lending a bit of first aid, maybe you saved her life,i understand how you feel,i think there reactions come from not really knowing what to do and also shock.
i spent years as a volunteer ambulance officer in Australia and i was a bit surprised by people reactions at a serious road accident, often people would be circling around the victim or victims and speaking about how the person(S) is fucked and wont make it,i think its just there way of dealing with the shock, there is a real need for basic first aid training in this country, should be taught in schools. anyway Well Done

In Australia they ask a seriesly fucked up person: "Are you allright?"
Like Salvajeuno, thanks for sharing this experience, even such an awful one. It's part of what we live with in Cambodia. I never stop at traffic accidents so I don't know what it is like.Chris K wrote:Most of us would grimace or flinch at the sight of a young khmer girl, unconscious and bleeding from massive head injuries, her arm twisted obviously broken and choking on her own blood. But I think like other posters that a study into that habit maybe could help reveal what makes people behave that way, and that maybe that can be addressed early on.
I have to admit that it sort of resonates with me, but not in a gruesome traffic accident case. When my father died on his way to the hospital and he was just lying on the stretcher in the ambulance, I felt that I had to take photos of him, dead, because my mother, sisters and brothers were in France, and that maybe they would want to know or see how he was at the time. Also with hindsight, that was probably a way for me to not be all alone in that moment. That may give some elements of response to understand that particular behavior.Just Robbed wrote:Have seen Khmers taking photos of the dead previously, including cops taking snapshots with people posed next to the body.
