Nice colour video of 1960 Phnom Penh
Maybe you all have seen it already but i just found it and i must say 1960s phnom penh looked quite a nice place to live in. Considerably better developed that what it is now, sad to see how many parks have gone down in favor of shop houses.

Thanks for the share.
I didn't recognise quite a few places on there; am I being a dolt, or have things really changed that much?

It's a 1965 promotional film that's been easily available for a long time, I remember buying a "VCD" of it way back.
It's worth keeping in mind that this is just showing you a very narrow angle. It only shows nice, clean streets. There are some lovely sweeping views of Monivong, and no ugly washing lines to spoil the view because it was illegal to do so at the time. It's a lovely film, just part of a whole series that were made to promote the Sangkum Reastre Niyum, the other parts more concern factories and plantations and bottling plants etc.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Here's a different view of Psah Thmei in the early 60s...

No, they never had a tram system here. The capital was far too small during the French protectorate, and traffic was very light.

Looks really nice back then. Plenty of greenspace, no trash on the streets and it doesn't look like the whole city needs a fresh coat of paint. My impression is quality of life has fallen off the cliff in PP compared to now.
Those antique cars are really cool too.

If you don't know where you're going, any road takes you there.
Great video.
Stacks of mercedes driving around. How would they have afforded them in those days ?
Was that a Leyland Mini Moke the father and son were driving ?
terrible to think it was all undone so horribly some years later.....i wonder if they both survived.

French-born propaganda film, but very nice.
The French royal class must be really irked by the rise of the Asian stone, glass and steel towers today. No aesthetics here anymore, except maybe 1-2 new projects.
The sad feeling of nostalgie rising in me. Such loss, what a weak system, they could not defend themselves, or were too busy whooping it up, and the filthy rich locals got their just desserts?
I hate to say this, but the French government (NOT the people) at the time chose a weak king, so he could not control the masses and therefore must rely on them. Hence the terrible outcome.
Support your local beef, defend yourself, or suffer the consequences. It's a jungle out here.

Definitely looks like the mini moke which BMC rolled out in 1964. The aerial footage is very good for it's day and well done.
Agree, felt uneasy to think such a peaceful setting went to disaster shortly after.
