Good timing thread as I have just returned home after an operation at the Royal Phnom Penh Hospital out near the airport.

I had a 2cm suspected skin cancer removed under local in the full blown operating theatre which took about an hour to complete with 2 surgeons, a gas-man and 2 male nurses. As it was local they kept me informed at each stage and were very precise and methodical. Took me up to the theatre and back in a wheelchair much to my annoyance and let me rest in a room with a blanket to recover til I said I wanted out. Bill was $1201 all up as I could claim on insurance and the required antibiotics and painkillers were ready in 5 mins. Everything on the bill is minutely itemised.

Referred there by Gavin Scott and the whole thing was organised and finished within a week. The biopsy will be done in Bangkok.

The whole process was very professional and everything explained completely at all stages and came in 200 under the quote. The hospital is very well run and spotlessly clean.

On this experience I heartily endorse them.

Thanks - digits crossed - it's a suspected squamous cell carcinoma and apparently not the worst kind. I have very fair skin and grew up with regular skin blisters from the sun in NZ when there was no sunblock so lucky to have got this far without one appearing before

Interesting thread, but has it actually answered the original question? I'm glad starkmonster's appendicitis issue was dealt with well, but that operation is hardly very tricky. It's good that Phnom Penh can now handle that sort of procedure, but when it comes to really top end medical treatment requiring sophisticated treatment and the best doctors available, I would still prefer to jump on a plane. It's not for no reason that HE and anyone who can truly afford it regularly goes to Singapore for their health issues.

Yeah, but how much of that is down to showing off and bragging rights?

Thanks to everyone who's reported positive experiences and where. Very useful to know.

It's all very well to recommend hospitals in Singapore and Bangkok, but when a severe emergency such as the OP's develops those aren't an option. Good to know there are some competent facilities available nowadays.

I'm curious did the hospital demand the $3,000 payment up front before performing the surgery, or a deposit, or did they just take Starkmonster's word that he would pay it?

They didn't ask for anything up front. I just had to sign the quote.

That's surprising, since 90% of expats don't have $3,000. Did they get some guarantee or assurance as to your ability to pay before they did the surgery? Did you have to pay before they let her out of the hospital?

I haven't yet been asked to pay anything regarding my last week surgery when I have been back home for 4 days already but SHV is a small town compared to PP and good reputation goes a long way here.

No they didn't check anything or ask any questions, they just told me what it was going to cost, then got on with it.

On the last day in the morning the surgeon signed her off and said she could go when she feels ready. Later I went to the cashier on the third floor without being prompted and paid, then we left shortly after.

Of course I was rocking my gold plated Hun Sen watch and had my 2013 Ministry of Cults and Religions VIP parking pass in my car window, so they knew I was good for it.

I'm guessing your joking here? (does the HE watch have a pic of his face on it? much like the "bitches " watch in that movie Spy?)
How did they know you were good for the cash? Was it the singlet you were wearing covered in paint spots?
