Just to balance the books a touch;
I have a mate ( in Oz ) who ordered a big mac meal at our local Maccas on Saturday.
The meal cost $10.50, he handed over $20 note.
The cash register tells the numb nutted operator that $9.50 change is required.
The idiot hands over $15.90 in change..
How does that shit happen?

Have to say it took longer than I expected to get this response.Lucky Lucan wrote:Put three adze's against a wall, and ask them to take their pick.
Chinese are horrible at math. I always asked math questions of my students, very simple ones, there is always one stereo typical chinese nerd that will know the answer quickly. The rest just stare at you with obviously nothing going on between the ears at all. I taught at an international school where I had to teach English, math, PE, music(basically just walked them to the music room and a proper music teacher taught them) and media studies(watched movies, cartoons, messed around on youtube or read comic books) and very few of them were any good at even simple math. My math is horrible, really bad, I was always nervous the kids were going to work that out but they never did.MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote:The difference is that the Chinese can at least perform basic math operations.GaryH wrote:If you think Khmer don't think for themselves, try living in China.TristranandIsolde wrote:"BETTER TO OBEY THAN TO THINK."

The myth about them being good at math is exactly that, a myth. It comes from 2 things, firstly the ones you meet living and studying abroad are far far far above the national standard intelligence, even the dumb ones you meet travelling are smarter than the ones back home. And the infamous test results from years ago that a lot of people base their opinions of Chinese students on are well known to have been faked. It's still a running joke amongst Chinese years later.
Although I did laugh my first week in Cambodia when a lady in my guesthouse used a calculator to work out how much change to give me when the bill was $23.50 and I paid with a $20 and a $5

In defense of local peoples, what do expect from a bunch of rice farmers and forest dwellers?
Would the people of Liverpool, Manchester, or even South Chicago greet a newcomer as well, and give back proper change? I don't think so.
Math is a specific skill with a specific brain area. Good for calculating (don't quote me) catapults, cannon shots, artillery, merchant activities, etc.
That part of our brain is being "given a break" by calculators and software.
Soon only software engineers will calculate for us (or the robots they programme) and we can revert back to simian monkeys with our Full Moon parties and gardens.
Lucky Lucan, if you're reading this, <sigh>, let me explain.
There is a robot movement to supplant human productivity. The current "lie" (like NAFTA) is that robots will allow us a surplus and a stipend so we can all be creative, that's the supposed plan. I am being witty and joking about that.
I'll spoon feed you the rest. I know my ideas are a bit avant-garde, coming from the lunatic fringe of L.A. and Berkeley.

One of the first things I did when I took my hotel over was introduce a Point of Sale programe. I think the cost of a few hundred has saved me way more than the losses I would have had (and saw in the early stages) in wrongly added up bills plus problems with customers feeling ripped off if the error was in my favour.
Another way to confuse them is to give then a recipe for something and ask them to make three times as much. Even worse, give them a recipe for a 4 person serving and ask them to make enough just for one person.
