Drink driver hit and run on two 18 year old school girls
After leaving a wedding party, this drunk man (we know his name) didn't wait at a crossroads for passing traffic, and hit the motorbike of my sister in law (Sokchan), who was driving with her friend (Somealea), with his Toyota Camry. He threw them 20m across the road. He didn't stop, he kept driving until he hit a parked car and was caught by locals who saw what happened. The girls are 18 years old and aspiring students at Paul Dubrue school.
Since that day, Sokchan and Somealea have had surgery on their legs. Sokchan's shin bone was broken, her hip dislocated and her pelvis cracked. She may not walk for the next 2 months, putting an immediate end to her studies. I am not clear about Somealea's injuries, but when she was taken from the scene, one of her leg bones had broken through the skin and the jeans that she was wearing.
Their families have spent the past 2 days at the police station, trying to work out what will happen next with the driver. It turns out that he has the police station on his side for whatever reason. My wife asked that the man pay the cost of the hospital bill for both girls. The bill at this point is more than $30,000. The man countered her offer and said he would pay $2,000 to each girl toward their medical expenses. The police involved said, "he is being very kind by offering this. You should take it".
I know that this is a common story, but we are not going to lie down with this. The girls are very popular at their school. We aim to make this story go viral. We will not rest until justice is done. This can be a massive turning point in Cambodia if handled right, and we plan to handle it right. We would like to have their story published in the PPP for publicity, and to try to make a landmark case with this. This type of injustice needs to be finally noticed on a grander scale. We have set up a fundraising page for the girls, in order to help pay their medical bills. If we exceed the amount, we will use whatever money is left to make sure that this man is taken to court and put in jail if he does not comply fairly. Your support will be pivotal in the road to justice.
However, just by SHARING this story with your friends, family, colleagues etc, you have helped more than you know.

I hear he's a lawyer and for some reason everyone is afraid to mention his name. I'll post his name if someone sends it to me. The local press should write about this too. The only thing Khmers respond to is public shaming.Felgerkarb wrote:How connected is the perp? That will determine the end result of your actions.
If you want it to go viral, use his name.

During the "negotiation" stage, naming him wouldn't be in our best interest. He will be shown the extent of our reach and how damaging this can be for him. One step at a time.

Of course it would be. He's offering you peanuts because he views you as nobodies who can't harm in any way. What is the plan, let it drag out until it's old news and then name him? That's pointless. If a lawyer broke a couple of girls legs and is refusing to compensate them, you should go to the press with all information now.dannysmith wrote: During the "negotiation" stage, naming him wouldn't be in our best interest. Popular girls or not, Cambodia isn't going to change because you set up fundme pages and ask journalists to write about it. Gavin is right, PPP publishes news. Unless you're going to pay them for an advertorial they will most likely not publish this story. Why? Because it's not news, and I hate breaking that to you.dannysmith wrote:The girls are very popular at their school. We aim to make this story go viral. We will not rest until justice is done. The turning point you are hoping for will simply put not come. It didn't come when that medical student ran over all those people, or when they assassinated Kem Ley in broad daylight, and it sure as death and taxes won't come from a white knight with a viral fundme page.
Help the girls all you want but forget nation wide change. Good luck.

I disagree. Lawyer gets drunk and breaks two girls legs and corrupt, lazy police do nothing may be news. It becomes less newsworthy every day that goes by though. A good public shaming might get him to pony up some cash or incentivize the police to arrest him.Alexandra wrote: Popular girls or not, Cambodia isn't going to change because you set up fundme pages and ask journalists to write about it. Why is he posting links to the 18 year-old girls' Facebook pages here? All that will accomplish is having GONK and Jamie Lambo send them friend requests.

Yeah when the corrupt officers see the viral fundme page and read about themselves in English language media they'll go "hang on a minute we are the real criminals" and then this story will end happily and Disney will buy the rights.

Usually, when there is an accident like this, the perpetrators vehicle is impounded until the parties involved have settled for a sum of money.
The families of the young girls have this in their favour.
It's unlikely the offer will get much higher though. Unless I'm wrong, it's around $2.5k if you kill somebody on the road.
Also seems fishy that a Khmer private clinic would front 20k + of medical expenses, unless the families involved are very well heeled.
Anyhow, like it or not, this guy is likely never going to go to jail, pay over $5k in total or suffer professionally as a result of ramming these young girls from behind.
The fundraiser is the best chance of covering the medical cost, assuming that all is kosher here, of course.

They don't have that in their favor if the drunk driving lawyer is sufficiently well connected that his car wasn't impounded.Jackal wrote:Usually, when there is an accident like this, the perpetrators vehicle is impounded until the parties involved have settled for a sum of money.

One of the girls has a white brother in law, so he must be good for it.Also seems fishy that a Khmer private clinic would front 20k + of medical expenses, unless the families involved are very well heeled.

That's a fair question to raise, but my understanding is that the guy who started the Go Fund Me page is a known expat business owner in Siem Reap. I have no reason to believe it's not kosher.Jackal wrote:assuming that all is kosher here, of course.

I'm confused by this one and have a question for the OP.
In an email to our admin account sent an hour after you posted this, you stated the bill was $20000 and he had offered the girls $1000 each.
Everything else in your post is an exact copy of your email to me. Why have you changed the figures, particularly the figure about how much he has offered to pay the victims. That makes no sense.
I'm not saying this is bogus. I'm just trying to understand why you would change such a key fact from two versions of the same incident, especially as those two accounts were posted within an hour of each other.
