Staying on a business visa?
Staying on a business visa?
Hello I am 20 years old from the Netherlands and stayed my last 3 years in Peru, but sadly they turned the immigration laws more strict and I can't stay anymore.
So Cambodia got my interest I am thinking about relocating to Sihanoukville, As i understand I could enter the country ask for a ordinary/business visa and then extend it at a tourist agency (how much $ for 6 months)?.
But I am worried that after I learned the language and make my self comfortable that i would be removed again.
My problem in Peru was that my online business didn't fit the requirements for a business visa.
And I only have a income of 200 - 250 $ a month and 1000$ in savings, cambodia is more poor then Peru and I did fine in Peru.
I don't want to stay in the tourist section and I won't accept to pay any "white"-taxes, I would like to get the most bang for my buck so i can spend my free time studying and wild camping in the wilderness.

Do not - repeat NOT - go to Sihanoukville with an income of $250 a month. There be dragons and danger.
You will not do fine on $200-$250 a month in Cambodia.

Is sihanoukville more expensive than the other cities? and will I even have problems if I life like a local peasant, my diet exist of eggs, oatmeal, pasta, chicken (all bought in bulk) and i can live in some shitty room my only hobbies are woman, camping, lifting, and studying. My main objective is to spend whole day studying in my room and my income will increase.
I guess the best way to discover is just go there and look if i will survive if i won't it isn't that big problem since i can always return.
My budget was based on the wages in Cambodia (and I put some on top of that) but i can assume the foreign-tax can be pretty steep.
How much do you recommend for a bare minimum life. basically only home cooked food and i can shower in the gym.

Hello young man,
1st, you should heed Scobienz's advice.. punto!
2nd, ¿habla español? Sounds like you might after 3 years in Peru. I would suggest Guatemala and do visa runs into Mexico.
Lastly... if you must come to SE Asia... make sure you have return air fair to the Netherlands or somewhere.
Good luck joven.

I'm not sure what living costs in SHV are and I'm sure others will chime in but your visa costs will be $180 or so for the first seven months taking into account the first month.
A crap room will cost $120 at least and assuming you won't have transport you will need at last $50 to get around, likely more. Forget women, forget booze, forget any degree of comfort. It will be a truly horrible existence.
Why a westerner would want to come to live in SHV like a local is beyond me. Forget this comparing local salary nonsense. It doesn't work like that. You are not local and you can never live like a local.

You said you only have a $1000 in savings and income of around 250 a month? How do you plan to even get to Cambodia from Peru if a one-way ticket would eat up your entire $1000 savings plus a whole month of income. All that just so that you can come to live under the poverty line in a poverty stricken country where zero fucks are given to stupid foreigners who make the mistake of doing what you are planning. It will almost guaranteed not end well for you. Find somewhere cheaper you can make a go of it in South America.

its possible to stay in $40 pm establishments if you dont mind living in a box, shitting in a hole in the floor and using a bucket for a shower
lmao, until you can speak khmer you will have to get by paying "white man tax", and until you know what the local prices should be, you probably wont even know what the local prices are
$200 per month here in Cambodia wont get you very far, and you definitely wont be saving anything, you will barely be existing
$35 ordinary visa + $165 for your 6 month visa extension,

You don't have room for a gym with a shower in a $250 budget.
You don't have much of a choice with white taxes unless you have a long hair dictionary but you can't afford one.
You will be miserable and within 6 months you'll be crazy, destitute or dead. Why torture yourself?
Bless

Even though Cambodia seems (or still presents itself like) one of the poorest countries in the world, it for sure isn't one of the cheapest countries in the world. If you have only 200-250 USD of income per month, I suggest you head back to the Netherlands, finish (or start?) some real study there, so there will be a brighter future ahead of you. At the age of 20, 1000 USD in the bank, and 200-250 USD a month might seem a lot, but it really, really isn't. And with a salary like this at your age, and a history of leaving the Netherlands at the age of 17 apparently, you do not really seem to take good care about yourself.
You need a lot more income than the money you are making now, to live even a half decent life here, and since you can not profit from the Dutch welfare state anymore you should save more money for misfortune that will happen to you in the future, getting old, losing a job for some time, maybe have a child, god knows what.
Here there's no safety nets, other than starting the 10.000th go-fund-me-because-my-toe-nail-got-infected-and-I-ran-out-of-money page.
If you make 800-1000 USD a month, have special skills you can market, and have some savings, start considering Cambodia again. For instance, the visa alone will take 30 USD out of your 200-250 USD monthly budget. Living on 180 USD a month is what Cambodians do, but they usually share facilities with a whole family and a family income of 180 USD a month won't do unless you live in the boonies, have a big farm and produce your own food.
About the white taxes, don't worry too much about it. You won't realize you pay them during your initial stay here, and after that you will be used to it. Until your command of Cambodian language reaches a certain level, which took me two years, you will pay the tax. And after that, you sometimes will still pay white taxes. Besides that you will pay white taxes every time you need something from a government official, but that's called corruption.
Camping wild in the wilderness seems a nice idea to meet government officials and provide them with a good source of income. I highly recommend not to go camping in the bush until you know exactly what the local situation is. There's loads of government officials having many reasons not to want you to be camping out there. You might see stuff that needs to be hidden. Extortion, a beat up, or even a bullet in the head might be the price of a few wild nights of camping in the bush and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Cambodian's 'caring' about the forest don't like you around.
edited for typos
A crap room can be had for $40-$80, a fair few new small studios around $150-$180 in SHVscobienz wrote:I'm not sure what living costs in SHV are and I'm sure others will chime in but your visa costs will be $180 or so for the first seven months taking into account the first month.
