Homeless Australian; anyone know him?
Homeless Australian; anyone know him?
Hi all,
I am new to this forum but not to Cambodia. I was curious if anyone knows this man (photo: Some friends of mine found him laying outside their house this Sunday afternoon, he had infected feet and said he had been robbed and could not find his hotel. He was in bad shape and had been walking around for days it appears. Potentially this man has mental issues but he also mentioned using/enjoying psychedelics. I thought the story sounded a bit off so I figured I would see if anyone knows him and can help understand if my friends got played by helping him and paying for his hospital visit, or if this person was simply having a bad day and deserved our time, help and sympathy.
Cheers.

Putting his face online cause he is a bum? That will surely fix his problems.
OP, did he give his name? The name of his hotel?
I remember a while ago there was a thread about a guy who also had infected feet or injuries to his legs. There was a photo too. Will try to find the thread.
Edit: here it is: http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/view ... 5&#p802695
They don't look like the same man though.

I wouldn't have rushed in either particularly when the main motivation seems to be...prettyvacant wrote:Putting his face online cause he is a bum? That will surely fix his problems.

in fact I think it's wrong...assuming it was taken without permission I can't see any substantive merit in the photo...taken on a whim and fancy without much regard for the consequences or the person in question...
should be removed...

Exactly. I would like to see a pic of OPs friends. Facebook profiles would help too. Examine how gullible they look, and what kind of pages they like.maybe we could get a photo of his or her friends also?
Personally, I don't think it's right or wrong. At least the "exposure" may contribute to bring help to him. Friends, family or organization.
There are an increasing number of washed ashore, down-on-their-luck, destitute expats and/or cons. This forum has plenty of such threads. I don't see it as an issue if that can help assist them.

Putting his face online because at least then there is some chance he will be recognized (or pitied) and receive the help he probably needs. If he is having mental health issues, they most likely won't sort themselves out before he is in dire straights. It's worth the possible embarrassment to him.prettyvacant wrote:Putting his face online cause he is a bum? That will surely fix his problems.

Ok, Joon and Edwardo. Points taken. It is a double edged issue with no clear answer in my opinion. If it leads to somebody being able to help him out, that is cool. The integrity issue could be seen as a moot point since this is a "lawless" society of sorts. On the other hand, he can barely be identified from these pics
Now let's hope nobody here has a mental issue. I'll plaster your face on every bulletin board from here to Alaska

sure...if it had been presented in that way in the OP I might have had a different reaction...but it was about him/her and friends...thought it was disrespectful...there's still a weighing up that needs to happen between what we think may be right and what that person may wish for themselves...Joon wrote:Personally, I don't think it's right or wrong. If it was, God forbid, someone you loved dearly whose photo was posted with the same information as in the OP, would you appreciate the posting or not? I know I would. Especially if it was posted from a far off, poor country with little or no public resources allocated for the mentally or physically incapacitated.prettyvacant wrote: It is a double edged issue with no clear answer in my opinion.
And if I did, and you posted it everywhere, and it all turned out to be some awful misunderstanding, and I was perfectly fine but now very, very embarrassed, I'd still thank you for your taking action.prettyvacant wrote:Now let's hope nobody here has a mental issue. Reiteration: point taken. Still not an easy issue though. Especially seen in the light of the OPs post, that had mainly to do with the fact if OPs friends were gullible or not.Edwardo wrote:would you appreciate the posting or not?
I would have lost a lot of money if I had dragged every wind-driven barang/farang/gwailo/gora/kafir, that I have encountered over the years, to the hospital. Happy that somebody else is up to that task though

the thing is it's all conjecture...the sum of the circumstances are unknown including the fact that the bloke may rise to the occasion and resolve the issue without having a compromising picture posted round the world...prettyvacant wrote:Now let's hope nobody here has a mental issue
