Formaldehyde in all the fish in Sihanoukville fish market
I haven't seen this in the English language news anywhere, but I heard that they did tests at the Sihanoukville seafood market last week, and almost all of the seafood tested positive for formaldehyde. Has anyone who reads the Khmer news seen this?
This clearly isn't an isolated problem, as this article regarding tests of imported fish from Asia (predominately China and Vietnam) to the U.S. in 2013 shows, or this article from 2015, again focusing on Vietnamese and Chinese fish.
Where do people buy their seafood in Phnom Penh? I've been told that if you buy fish that isn't alive, there's a good chance it will have formaldehyde in it.

I have recently switched to live fish only diet. I have a family member going through chemo for the second time, I'm quite sure both cancers were toxic chemical related.

I've rarely seen anything other than live fish for sale, even at tiny corner markets. I always wonder about how any meat/ dead fish/ plucked poultry that hangs around all day doesn't go rotten quicker.Miguelito wrote:

Last time I bought fish at the SHV market it was swimming before my eyes at 2.30pm and killed in front of me and on my plate at 4.30pm.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.

Do you eat other meats, or only fish?GB8 wrote:I have recently switched to live fish only diet. I have a family member going through chemo for the second time, I'm quite sure both cancers were toxic chemical related.

Sure, I eat pretty much everything. I buy my meat from Dan Meats, chicken from Super Duper and fish from the market. I meant to weigh in on the street food thread but forgot. Concerning the re-used cooking oil, a few years back a chap wrote a long post about his findings. I don't know how accurate he was, but he made sense to me. According to him the oil the vendors use on the street chicken is highly carcinogenic. I haven't eaten street chicken since I read his post. I'll try and find it.

The fish is ok , it comes in fresh everyday . It is prawns coming from Vietnam that are the issue .
They are injected with formulin , which contains formaldehyde . It acts as a preservative , but is
also extremely bad for ones health .

I believe this is true. I live in Laos most of the time, when I'm not working in PP, and this is a well known problem there especially all seafood coming from Vietnam, and also fresh meat. All the seafood sold in markets in Laos is dead because of the transit time from places like Dong Ha, and I don't know any Lao people that trust it - they all eat river fish that can be bought live.Miguelito wrote: I've been told that if you buy fish that isn't alive, there's a good chance it will have formaldehyde in it.
Fresh meat also tests for formaldehyde during the occasional rounds of testing that the authorities carry out - it seems that the practice was introduced by Vietnamese sellers and has spread to the more unscrupulous Lao sellers. My wife always buys cuts of meat that look like they're a bit dry or grey at the edges, on the premise that any meat that is still fresh, shiny and pink in the early evening should not be (animals generally butchered the previous night). Some people also say that flies won't gather round the meat cuts that have formaldehyde , so you should go for the pieces with a large fly fan-base. Not sure if that is a reliable indicator or not.

Formalin, formaldehyde, aka embalming fluid for dead bodies used to prevent corpse decomposition.
Don't worry, be happy.
Just coat the crap in a flour and water mix then deep fry and soak in old fat.
Enjoy your formaldehyde, glue coated fish with a 50 cent beer which has two cubes of deliciously clean ice floating on top.
What more could a bloke ask for.

This morning I had my doctor insert his finger up my ass. Does that count?
It's an annual event and something that gets easier to suffer the more it's done.
Happy to advise that I should be around for another year.

I don't know how they would inject meat and fish ? The market sellers here have a different method , they dip in a borax solution .nabanga wrote:I believe this is true. That is the reason Borax is extremely hard to find here , it is a prohibited product .
