Why are Cambodians so loud?
Forgive me my ignorance or if this subject has been brought up before. I think it probably has. I've only been in Phnom Penh for a few months.
Why, oh why, are Cambodian people so noisy? The worst are the children. They seem to play by screaming at each other continuously for as long as they are outside. Some of these kids are screeching or howling as long as they are outside. Adult Cambodians are screaming at each other while talking at close range.
What's the deal?

Like all the "Why are (insert nationality of choice) so (insert adjective of choice), this is a pretty inane question. I have never met really quiet children but find most Khmer kids well behaved compared to their spoilt Western counterpart brats. And I can't say I notice much shouting by the adults around my neighborhood, maybe move away from the beer garden?

I have three in university. They were taught at a young age to be well behaved. That's what I taught them and that's what they are.Khmerhamster wrote:^ this.
OP do you have kids?

I'M ONLY GOING TO AGREE WITH HALF OF WHAT YOU SAY. THE BIT ABOUT BEING MORE ANNOYING.
I was in the stairway when two little shits for no reason shouted full force at me from behind a few weeks ago. I turned around and returned the favour. They didn't think it was so funny after that.
Raise your kids or somebody else will.

As inane a question as it is lets be honest here... Cambodians are generally a pretty loud bunch.

Kids are like farts.
Those belonging to other people are always more annoying.

Typically here infants here are indulged and get away with blue murder until they reach a certain age when the law is laid down.Christyler6 wrote:I have three in university. I find Cambodian kids to be much more docile and respectful in group settings than western kids.
Infants/toddlers excepted.
Cambodian adults now... that's a different story.
In 21 years of being here I have never really had an issue with noise and all the Khmers that I have worked with or associated with were certainly not noisy. The Khmer people that I generally come into contact with now, and those that live in the same apartment block as myself are fairly reserved and very polite. Even at week end around the pool where one would expect a certain amount of noise the kids are usually kept well under control. There are occasional BBQs and parties near the pool and they are never particularly noisy.
I think the problem of noise is more to do with location rather than nationality. The op needs to move away from the "bogun" neighborhood, and that does not particularly mean to move to an expensive area, but an area where everyone has jobs of some sort. Out on the street close to my apartment for example there are lots of vendors, stalls and small shops, all the people are quiet and polite and busy working. There are few children about because they are all at school. A kilometer or so down the street there are some very cheap rooms from about $50 and up, all occupied by people on low wage jobs such as garment workers. They live in close proximity to each other, they come home eat and sleep, and even on their day off they are quietly either cooking, washing clothes or just sitting around.
To the OP don't make the mistake many low budget travelers make, and stating this I am not inferring you are of this ilk. They stay in backpacker areas that have pimps and drug pushers disguised as moto dops and tuk tuk drivers then they assume that all Khmers of this ilk are the same. It's like going to the US and staying somewhere in the Bronx and assuming all Americans are black gangsters and crack users.

some are loud, some are not. When I lived near Street 110 they were loud and rude around the clock. Here in TTP they just park in front of my gate and trap us in the compound all day. It was sweet listening to Morticia rip the shit neighbors a new ass for doing it too.
