Can Cambodian nationals leave the country if they have bad police record?
I've searched everywhere but couldn't find any info on it. A friend of mine wants to take his Cambodian girlfriend to Thailand for a week or two. She has a valid passport but she's been sentenced before and served jail term. According to her she won't be able to leave the country, is this true? She doesn't have to report to the police every X days, as far as I know.
So long as her passport is valid for at least a further 6 months from the date of entry into Thailand she is good to go.

Why wouldn't they be able to leave the country? I doubt criminal convictions get recorded in their passports or that immigration officers are able to check criminal records of departing nationals before waving them off.
Countries which require Cambodians to have a visa before entry might care, but that's a different matter.
Since "your friend" and his girlfriend are heading for Thailand they should have no problems. Maybe she doesn't want to go and is making excuses, or maybe her "friends" are jealous and looking to prevent/spoil her trip. Or does she have a criminal record in Thailand? Thai immigration may have access to that information and could refuse her entry.
Immigration officers can always refuse entry to anyone not playing the asylum card.

As long as she isn't sought after for crimes she hasn't yet answer to she should be perfectly ok. Even so I doubt the border posts have a comprehensive local criminals on the run database anyway.
On a side note kudos to your friend to be aware of things and to think before acting, IMHO rare enough occurrence to be duly noted.

What was she in jail for ? Is there a bail system in cambodia ?
Hi,
Thanks for all the replies. As far as I know the girl has no pending cases or anything, she was jailed for drugs, for around 6 months. She's never been outside Cambodia.
She'll be crossing the land checkpoints, not the airports, I doubt there is any sort of computerized record access at these checkpoints.
Of course it would be easier for him just to find another girlfriend ...and no the "friend" is not me, just his English is not that good.

ASEAN countries may not check, however visiting a Western country will be at the discretion of the authorities.
