Changes at Otres Beach
Changes at Otres Beach
I was there 5-6 years ago, it was nice. Went back this fall, all the businesses seemed to have been forced into about a one block area. It's hideous now, looking more like a squatter colony then chill beach area. One suspects they were trying to prevent development from spreading on unspoiled beach? However its so hideous now....
You want nice you need to go to where there is nothing else around. A good rule of thumb anywhere in the country.
Perhaps the Okhnea who owns the land concession has plans for the future there.
2 areas of development on the beach now with the best bit being in between - called the long beach it devoid of any bars etc. the Original area now called otres 1 is still a messy shambles with new construction going on. the far end, totally buggered now, calls itself otres 2 - everything overpriced there -- blooming hotels with swimin pools and they have encroached onto the public beach on almost all that area with restaurants - those structures were supposed to be removed last year... still there ... 6 years ago this was virtually empty countryside.....the village about 200m from the beach is now another hub of construction not a lot left of the wee village now..concrete everywhere ....progress some will say!
And the sides of the roads all the way out there strewn with crap of course... lovely place
Even the new pier which was halted last year before it was finished and was supposed to be removed is still mostly standing.
At least there are gardners maintaining the long beach area... its worth the visit!

The provincial government have a plan to take everything off the beach from the Occheuteal wharf all the way to the end of the Otres beach and move it back 50m. They want a clean beach, an approx. 40m strip of landscaped grassed & planted land behind the beach, then a road, then all the resorts bars etc the inland side of the road. They have commissioned studies already to check if its feasible, and what they may end up doing is to have this layout in parts where they can, and compromise in other areas.
Nothing wrong with the idea, but they should have had this brainwave 15 years ago before investors spent combined millions on setting up resorts etc

Otres 2 is all "upscale" now, with the cheapest room around $60 all the way up to +$200. I've never been a fan of either beach to be honest. Even at Otres the cheapest is $25 for shitty bungalows which would cost you $5 anywhere else in the country. The restaurants still act like they own the beach by putting chairs 2m from the water. Many owners (one fat French lady in particular) prevent sellers from walking on "their property". I was buying from as many sellers as possible just to spite her.

mostly though not all...at the very end there's the golden river bungalows where you can get rooms for about $15...the main building is better than the bungalows...eating options almost zero outside the restaurants attached to the resorts...handy having your own transport to get around...LexusSchmexus wrote:Otres 2 is all "upscale" now

There's some pedophilia going on at otres, don't leave your daughter unsupervised. Last time I was there I saw a middle aged man with sunglasses walking into a hotel with two cambodian girls approx age 8-9 after a day frolicking on the beach.

Couldn't possibly be his 2 daughters?
Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.

This goes to a deeper question. What happens to the kid of Barang and Khmer? Kid is under suspicion for life as a sexually abused child? Dad always under suspicion as a pedophile tourist? More and more reason to export the wife and raise the kids up in western country.
Don't worry, be happy.

Some members have reported being followed by APLE types. Others are afraid to hold their own sons and daughters when going out in public.
Don't worry, be happy.
