Sad state of health care for locals.
my recent 2 night visit to Vietnamese hospital was much more entertaining.
After my guided tour around the entire hospital ( ICU was bestest) followed by lunch in the staff room with my "specialist" (his shout ), I eventually got settled into my room with 2 other patients who both had broken legs and arms from moto accidents.
My nurse soon entered the room to make sure i was comfy.. She noticed my pack of cigs sitting on my bedside table. She swiftly left the room and returned with my very own ash tray..

Caveat, it caters to 100% locals. No foreigners.
Saw the main parts of the hospital. Emergency, intensive care, wards, her specialty department. Lack of basic medical equipment like ventilators for the intensive care. Patients ambush bagging themselves to stay alive. Not enough monitors to cover every patient. The number two or three head doctor gave me his card and begged me to find stuff back home to send there.
Wards were worse. The building had a main patient room with office to the side. The patient room was 4 to a room, no dividing curtains for privacy. No sinks for washing hands. Open air on either side. Floor was dirty, maybe never washed or mopped. Trash everywhere. Patient's families live in the same room as the patient. Missus' department was cleaner, but still unwashed floors. Patients live here for days, weeks, months, mostly because a lack of follow up care or long term care facilities. I asked the number two doctor in the department when this biopsy patient was still here a week after the procedure. Maybe will discharge in next week or two. There were patient's with brain trauma. I asked how the brain pressure was being measured. No measurement. When the patient gets worse (? On the daily rounds) then will need surgery.
That doctor's mother had a stroke. I asked why doesn't she get a brain scan to find the blockage and then appropriate clot buster. The reply? Don't have. The Japanese hospital has it, but too expensive.
All the staff there - doctors, nurses, therapists, etc., are miracle workers. They try to make miracles happen for their patients every day. And the patients? Saints. One patient was stuck four times for an IV by students. Not a single complaint or crossed look.

Well look at that. NkOTB has just done again exactly as I outlined earlier in this post. Makes a stupid inane thread for people to pick at.. Does not reply at all again here and has just now made another new stupid thread on if Aeon Mall is good or bad. You are right, it's like it's simply just to annoy people. The guy is real and not exactly a troll but I'm having trouble believing he's not doing this to annoy people.RBD wrote:

I called that a while ago.gavinmac wrote:It's definitely weird. Have you considered the possibility that he is just semi-retarded?
He reminds me of my mentally handicaped uncle.
Still, he doesn't seem suicidal so let's get on with the mocking!
pew, pew, pew, pew!
Good post kid, thanks for the insight.
It's a shame that most of the replies are from decrepit bitter old men & that there isn't a better contribution to the post

He is, and would probably freely admit it himself. But not because of this comment - not even close.riverman wrote:

Miracle workers??? Last month i visit and sleep in 3 different hospitals, village, takeo hospital and russian hospital. Father of my gf became sick and almost dying. I saw some unbelievable things and had some unbelievable experiences with the mirakel doctors. First of all, the doctors dont care their patients, i saw different times that PATIENTS where helping other patients in emrrgency, and doctor was outside and was watching and laughing. The father was transported with ambulance from the village hospital to takeo hospital, because i needed blood. In takeo there was noooo blood, finally the family paid 70$ for 350ml blood to a tuc tuc driver!!!!( emergency) Also second and third time they paid for blood, this time they paid the doctor to get blood!! I was not allowed to give my blood because 0+ and B+ cant together. I showed them a donorcard, and said thats possible to mix, doctor said " no can not, we need to buy). Also in russian hospital is DEALING in blood very normal. I visit the blood bank in pp to donor my blood to the father( and yes, o+ a+ is possible...,) i talked with a japanese volunteer, and told her my experience, and she knew that doctors sell the blood ( DONORS give blood for free to help people, blood bbank give it for free to a hospital, and a doctor sell it. And now there is a shortage of blooddonors, strange????? Patients in the same room as the dad paid 40-65$ for 350ml blood.its about negociating.
When i stayed some nights in takeo hospital, the father got a emrrgency at night, the nightdoctor was sleeping and had his number on the door of his room, i knocked on the door and was calling him, but phone was off, 5 minutes later lights go on and he opens the door, my gf said to him that the father had big problems. Doctor not answer and went back inside!!! We went back to the father, other patients where helping him, 15 mimutes later the doctor came, he cleaned infuse, and walked again away. Everybody thought he came back with medicines or to help him. But he not came back, light was off and back to sleep!!!!!!'most unbelievable thing i ever ecperienced in a hospital, in the negative way.
Also is everything to much for a doctor, answeing questions, explain things etc etc etc, no clear answrs, or they walk away. Russian hospital is better as takeo.but still, doctors are no miracle workers. They work to get money, not take care a patiënt.

Good post Barderks, sounds like a typical experience of the miracle workers. To be fair though, they are stuck in a very difficult situation. I understand that very few supplies are provided for them. If they have to treat someone the non-existent hospital budget isn't much use and they can't afford to pay for every tragedy themselves. Although a basic health care is supposed to be free here, it doesn't extend too far and patients without enough funds are regularly sent home to die. We all know this anyway, I've visited about 10 hospitals in Phnom Penh and most make Calmette look fancy. Clinics in the boonies... fuck knows.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I think it's an utter disgrace that the donor community doesn't provide all medical facilities free of charge to all Cambodians including, of course, payment of the salaries of medical staff. The government has more important things to spend its money on.
Reading most of NKOBs post, and I suspect that he not retarded but is actually Aspergers. Much of his observations and online persona display characteristics of the spectrum. I'd say for this, we would need to cut him a bit of slack if it true.
He's probably found a way to be able to express himself via this forum, while if face to face would find it much more awkward. Perhaps those who have met him might shed a bit more light.
NKOB - yes, you are right, there are a lot of things wrong with the medical care system in Cambodia. Things are changing slowly, and if you have a bit of coin, then can get the care one needs. Unfortunately in the boonies, most of those who are "doctors" or "nurses" are neither. So the unsanitory conditions you observed do not register with them. As for medical equipment, you do realise how much they cost? Where will they get the money from? The insurance and high fees for medical care in the US, covering the $x00,000/year salaries of medical practicioners, also demands for the best of equipment and facilities. How do you think that would work in Cambodia? In Australia, we have an effective medicare (despite the political rhethoric and scare campaigns at present), whereby the common joe blogs can get reasonable care, can you see the Cambodian government doing something similar - even the US couldn't get that right with Obamacare.
I know some excellent doctors in Cambodia who are equally frustrated, and try their best to provide good medical care. Unfortunately in the end, corruption usually wins out...... fish rot from the head down!
