Was in TK Mall/Avenue/whatever-its-called and there was Lucky Burger, Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, Metro, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut (?), Brown, Breadtalk, Snow Yogurt, Emperor Of China, Yunan (?), Ramen (?) and a few other local brands in one (very) small area. They could feed Zambia with all that.violet wrote:At the risk of inviting a few jibes... what I noticed most about Aeon mall is the vast number of square metres dedicated to eateries. Crazy amount. No western mall I've been to (in the UK/Aus) has that number of food outlets in a mall.
Aeon Mall. A good thing or bad?

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Western style malls opening up is inevitable as many people in PP get richer. I hate shops, but find Aeon to be OK as far as malls go - clean, cool, decent food, Monument books.
I normally reside in Vientiane where about 5 modern malls have opened in the last few years. All were grubby after the first week, sticky floor tiles, glass plate windows covered in grease and sellotape, row after row of shops selling exactly the same plastic crap as the regular old traditional market used to before the Govt knocked/burned them all down.
At least Aeon is kept looking like a mall is supposed to.

Malls in the US are in a slow, painful death spiral as many people do the bulk of their shopping online now. The mega retail stores who anchored the big malls for decades are going out of business at a rapid pace as they weren't able to shift their business model successfully enough to compete with the likes of purely online retailers like Amazon.com, Ebay, etc. I imagine the same thing will happen to Cambodia sooner or later with Baidu & Alibaba gaining popularity, although the transportation infrastructure and reliable package delivery services aren't sufficiently developed yet. I bet the majority of current Aeon mall goers are lookers and not buyers, except maybe for the food courts.

That might get a bit expensive if it applies to staff too. Although the French have been known to make excellent waiters, once you have trained them properly to mimic human behaviour.chkwoot wrote:Only foreigners should be allowed to enter Aeon. Problem solved. Win-win.

Teng boon ma imported the first escalator for the Olympic market. Didn't work long. There are boxes stacked on it last I looked.

Co Op Mart just opened here in Chau Doc with the very first escalators. Quite funny to watch. Though I saw yesterday that they have no switched them off.Playboy wrote:Back when Sorya Mall opened, with the first escalators in town, they had security guards top and bottom, to help people on and off to train them how to use them.bigphatt wrote:how precious is life when you spot a local from the boonies trying to find the courage to step on an escalator for the first time.scobienz wrote:slavedog wrote:Has anyone noticed how slowly those escalators move in Aeon? Hahaha . .if they went any slower they would be in reverse.

I like being outdoors and dislike large enclosed spaces.
The thing I hate most about local shopping centres is that the escalators don't line up in a way that allows you to quickly zig-zag to the upper floors. You always have to walk in a big circle on each floor or try to find a lift that is buried in the bowels of the building.
The bright lights and shiny floors give me a headache and the lack of natural light or air compounds it.

Are you the guy driving the small train at ground floor?newkidontheblock wrote:First time in Aeon Mall. Felt like any mall in America. Except for the Khmer script, all signs in English (or Japanese). Even the overhead announcements in English. No feeling at all of the KOW.

I thought the operation manual was in Khmer.

Why would it be a bad thing?Cambodia is changing,
Choice is good, even if it costs more than what you would pay anywhere else.
Where else can a Khmer be really cold and feel how hard ice is to fall on

I have only been once as I am also not a big friend of malls but the place was absolutely dead apart from the restaurants. Just as in Bangkok.

Only places I always see really busy there is the food court and the book shop. A lot of Paragon is like a ghost town most of the time.Barang_doa_slae wrote:Not quite so at the jewelry and watch makers shops in Bangkok Paragorn mall.Hanno wrote:I have only been once as I am also not a big friend of malls but the place was absolutely dead apart from the restaurants.
