Fake Khmer monks by Central Market?
Been waiting at one of the taxi ranks behind central market this morning.
Over an hour, two local monks have walked up and asked for money, and two more helpers of monks have walked up and asked for cash.
The last one I just smiled at and got a mouthful for my troubles.
I'm guessing they are imposters? Never been approached by local monks like this anywhere in the country before and they didn't bother any drivers or locals.
Maybe the Chinese monk scam opened a few local eyes.

I understand that local real monks offer a prayer to you, only then (after the prayer) are you expected to give some money. Usually at your home.
Or you go to a temple.
They don't just ask for money.
Maybe you could ask those fake monks for a prayer to you...

The daily morning monks walking around in bare foot with a big steel bowl cover with an orange robe on their belly sometimes accompanying with a boy assistance will give you a 10 second-ish prayer after you give out money or food.

These Chinese fake monks have been around for a while and usually infest the riverside. Looks like they are extending their patch. Best to tell them to 他妈的关闭

In Phnom Penh, the “monks” are distinguishable on sight: they wear trousers and shoes under their robes, and they request donations at any time of the day. They speak no Khmer, limited English and only reluctant Chinese.
According to the Ministry of Cult and Religion, it’s a problem on the rise.“I am preparing a report for the minister to inform him about the problem, and all the ministries in the provinces, to make sure they know about this,” said Seng Somony, spokesperson for the Ministry of Cult and Religion.
Last month, a Chinese man dressed as a monk was taken to a police station in Mondulkiri for questioning after refusing to accept donations of under 10,000 riel, about $2.50.

Frankly I find these fake monks harmless. There were are quite a few fake monks a mixture of Chinese and Vietnamese walking around a day and night offering you prayers or selling Buddhist stuff in the Reap a bit over 2 years ago. If you ignore them they usually quickly go away and move onto find the next victim.
From my observations monks in the Kingdom fall into these categories in no order:
a. the teenage monks: they go to a pagoda to become a monk for a number months to repay their parents deed for giving birth to them.
b. the proper monks: stay in the pagoda all day every day; sweep, pray and strictly follow the Buddhist teachings and from senior monks.
c. the horny monks: indirectly hit buddhist chick attendees and friend them on Facebook and owned smartphones with naughty pictures
d. the greedy monks: save up money from monetary donations until he could afford a motorbike etc. to join civilization.
e. the homeless: become a monk because you can get free food and shelter.

Expats know when they see one. It's the tourists who get bitten mostly. I'm not sure why the local mockery don't somehow try to circumvent these scammers. Is there monk police?

These are Khmer, in normal orange attire - not the Chinese guys with the beads and stuff. If they keep at it they will be busted soon.
Chinese guys are funny. Has one approach me in Teuk Thlaa a while back and I told him to fuck off back to China, in Khmer, much to the amusement of the local Motodops by the market.

No, but the National Police monitor monks, and they are required to have a monk I.D. card. The problem with the Chinese monks is that they are foreign and the local police don't really know how to deal with them. What Your Name? wrote: Is there monk police?

yeah the monks OP is talking about ive seen a number of times,Jackal wrote:These are Khmer, in normal orange attire - not the Chinese guys with the beads and stuff. If they keep at it they will be busted soon.
they always float around a number of bus stations, often see them at Sorya bus station at Central Market and also at the Mekong Express Limousine bus station at Orussey Market,
there will be a perfectly normal looking young monk who goes around and doesn't do a great deal and a plain clothed guy going around the crowds collecting donations off people, mainly tourists but ive also seen locals falling for it too

I was most impressed when "my" fake monk owned up to earning a cool $100, or more, each day.
He approached me for about the 15th time over a month or so at the same spot on riverfront. After repeated refusals from me, I one day wasted my breath and told him why i never gave him money, after he finally had the balls to ask me, why??..
"because I think you're fake and i see you raking in more money than i can spend each day on grog", was my answer.
"One day you can buy me a beer", i said with a smile.
I was stunned yet amused when he one day approached me and blurted out, "my shout for beer" with a huge smile on his dial..
That was about 10 years ago..

I would've told him in Chinese. Wait, I live in China, not Cambodia.Jackal wrote:These are Khmer, in normal orange attire - not the Chinese guys with the beads and stuff. If they keep at it they will be busted soon.

Nonetheless I give Chinese tourists hell and lots of lost face when they misbehave in other Asian countries and on planes, when I'm travelling.
They don't like it, but they can't do a fucking thing because they don't have 50 of their buddies to bash me behind them.
Aging in Asia - like a fine durian.
