Next trip home, I need to deal with the contents of a storage locker. Inside, amongst other things, I have a lot of hand power tools. As I would like to set up a shop, what do you think is wise, sell all there and buy new here, or take them here next trip and deal with electrical conversions here?
Power tools seem so very expensive here, and used tools don't fetch much at home. As I am allowed about 100 lbs of check in baggage, I could travel light and take that much back here for free. What do you think?
If I do take them, what will I need to do to safely use them without damage.
Thanks.

Western Tools and Electrical
The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Bring them with you, especially if you plan on setting up a workshop. You can get a good range of quality power-tools here now. However, even second-hand stuff goes for a premium price. So even if things don't pan out too well for you you'll still be able to sell your angle-grinder, chain-saw and wood chipper for a good price here. .

lol, thanks. But, except for my own use, they wouldn't sell well there because they are not the right electrical, would that be a good bet?Lucky Lucan wrote:Bring them with you, especially if you plan on setting up a workshop. I'm thinking of packing a couple of shipping trunks and just paying the costs for accompanied baggage, but need to find out more about that and the associated costs.
I also have a lot of nice Kitchen stuff I would like to bring, including a Kitchen Aid mixer and all the attachments. The one I have is a commercial, and was $1000.00
Could I actually get an electrician to wire up my house with a 100 amp sub panel for that stuff? That would be cool.

My experience has been that tools of all description are very cheap here. There are rows of stalls in Psar Tuol Tom Pong selling, power towls, hand tools, air tools, welding equipment etc.

I find it to be a mixed bag.
Yes, all the spots listed by Meo Den have cheap new or secondhand tools. Unfortunately most would be second or third quality.
There are a number of good Japanese and American tool shops past the small market, great quality but more expensive than at home. I was quoted $1000 for the smallest plasma cutter in stock - and it wasn't a very special piece of kit at all.
Another example would be that in Europe I have a Steyr angle grinder, very high quality, which new cost the equivilant of $25.
Here I have a mactec angle grinder (actually probably a Chinese copy), cheap p.o.s, which cost $35.
If I had the chance, I would definitely bring my stuff from overseas. You can buy a power convertor for $30.

Indeed, most of the stuff in the local markets is the cheapest Chinese junk there is. Stuff that isn't intended to be exported to Europe or North America. It's Chinese/Vietnamese crap intended for the third-world market. Just look at the power bars, fans, brooms and so on. Plastic so brittle and wiring so think that they always break within a few weeks.
That being said, I've bought a lot of wrenches/sockets and stuff like that here for very cheap and it does the job fine. It's nice to be able to buy a single wrench as well.. As soon as you go for a "kit" though, it's pricier than back home for lesser quality. Some places like Home Top and a few others now have the "good" Chinese stuff.

110, thats kinda why I was pondering it more But even in the west, the electricity comes to the panel at 220, so could I not just wire up a 220 panel in my shop also? (maybe even bring one?) I'm not very smart with electrical so I really don't know much about those things.LexusSchmexus wrote:Wait, is your stuff 110 or 220?
Meo, tools are cheap, but quality is cheap as well. I think he's talking power tools, not 10mm wrenches.
I also have some machines like a good quality lathe (motor could just be switched). Now I am wondering if I should crate everything and ship DHL, or if taking some things with on the flight is not super costly.
Who has experience shipping any volume from afar?

I need to get a Dremel or similar just for some polishing/ modelling. Does anyone know where you can find a decent range fittings available anywhere for these? I'm guessing Psah Tuol Tom Pong will have them.
