Living rurally is a piece of piss. I have spent most all of the past three years in rural Preah Vihear.
Best roads in the country. Internet fast enough to stream whatever the fuck you might want to watch at any given time for $27 pcm.
Three hours to Phnom Penh by moto, 3.5 hours via car. two hours to stung treng, 2.5 to siam reap.
Electricity rarely cuts out, 60kw/h for $20.
Local markets are good, fresh meat and fruits and veggies.
People friendly without intruding, personal space seems to have slightly more consideration than in other provinces.
I did have malaria once, but that was my own fault.
The major downside is that it's dull as all hell. Options at night are between drink, weed, reading or looking at screens. I'd recommend decompressing in a large city once or twice a month.

Aren't the locals far more on the rice whisky in the mornings out in the boonies and is inbreeding a major issue?

that makes sense to me...plus bricks are relatively cheap and proper tradies are hard to come by...LexusSchmexus wrote:I'd say wooden houses are cooler. Cement and concrete have high thermal mass. Touch the outside (or even inside) wall of a house after the sun has gone down and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's still hot and all the heat is dissipating into your house. Not ideal at all. Traditional wooden houses are much cooler.
It's all about design and maximizing airflow.
some of my in-laws have a brick/cement house (internal and external walls) in phnom sampov and it's a shocker for heat..coupled with lack of and poorly positioned windows...when I asked why they weren't using plaster and timber frames he said it was hard to find the skills..
I prefer the sticks but the heat always gets the better of me...don't think I can ever adjust...
He's been in his room 35 years...time to let him out!

3 years in rural/remote Kampong Cham. Bloody lovely, farm etc but I agree with Jackal the boredom will turn you to bad substances that affect your vital bodily essences plus screen addiction if you don't find something to do. Depending on your disposition. Get into the fields Jackal!
Millipedes, centipedes, scorpions, snakes and spiders and other crawlies. I take no prisoners. Locals malingering with intent to malinger in the shadows is why you have big lights and weaponise.
Otherwise great choice compared to bloody Phnom Penh. Weekly market run to town and cheap but don't expect sushi bars or any great sophistication. But very different and pleasant lifestyle.

I lived in a wooden house for maybe a year or more in 2008. Noise gets in easier, mosquitoes get in easier, and some cunt put a metal roof on the house making it hotter than the underside of my nuts in 40c weather.
But all in all those mosquitoes fucked me off the most. Towards the end of living there at night i couldn't sit and watch TV without some sort of sheet or having to wear trousers and socks and all the fans on me so i didnt get all my blood drained but the skeeters.

I lived in one for a while too, and can concur that they suck. Rats chew their way in and next thing the fucking house is full of all sorts of creatures writhing around in a ball of disease just doing there best to fuck your life up while you swelter under a poxy plastic mosquito net.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Rats were in the roof where i was. Those dickheads scurrying around above your head is shit. Scorpion in the bathroom, huntsmen in the toilet pretty much exactly like this.Lucky Lucan wrote:Rats chew their way in and next thing the fucking house is full of all sorts of creatures writhing around in a ball of disease just doing there best to fuck your life up
Ironically it was my next house i lived in that was made of brick where the pit viper popped it's head through the window to say hello.
