Concrete houses often have a living room that's 6 meters high, makes it a lot more bearable. Wooden houses heat up very quickly during the day, inside it's easily well over 40 degrees C during the day (unbearable for me, a well built stone house will be in the low 30's during the day. Of course at night a wooden house cools of a lot quicker. Painting a wooden house in light color makes a difference, but for some reason they don't do that that often. I guess it's because Cambodian don tend to spend time in the house, but under it. Under the wooden house it can be extremely hot as well - at least for me.Jamie_Lambo wrote:i do find the wooden houses can be cooler due to slightly better ventilation, i think wooden houses cool down quicker than those made of concrete but theres no scientific knowledge to back that up just opinion and could be talking out my hungover arse lolKachang wrote:No, a wooden house is not cooler than a house of stone if you build a double brick wall. I'd say wooden houses are cooler. Cement and concrete have high thermal mass. Touch the outside (or even inside) wall of a house after the sun has gone down and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's still hot and all the heat is dissipating into your house. Not ideal at all. Traditional wooden houses are much cooler. The ones that are hot usually have modern tin roofing on them and tiny windows. That basically ruins the whole concept. Thatched roofs perform extremely well against the sun's heat.
Also, most Khmer villagers don't actually spend time in the home during the day, but rather lounge underneath the house where it's nice and cool. Once the sun goes down the house quickly cools down as the heat easily escapes from the gaps between the roof and walls. Again, when it's hot, it's hot everywhere, but I don't think brick and mortar houses and any cooler. It's all about design and maximizing airflow. There's a research paper done on the thermal properties of traditional Cambodian houses somewhere. The writer scanned various areas of the houses to determine why they worked well. I'm sure Lucky L remembers it.

Can you elaborate?Kachang wrote:
Where I live a house would cost you between 100 and 150 USD a month a, and I don't recommend to rent a room with a Khmer family. Might sound exotic but by doing so you will sacrifice ALL your privacy, and I'm not sure you could cope with that. I can't.

Forget those concepts.
ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
Vietnam is a piece of piss to get a 12 month visa but not cheap at around $450 +++
If i was going to "immerse" myself in the "bush" for a year, knowing what I know now, I would do it in the mountains of Vietnam . Or the Phils is dirt cheap in the provinces but then you wouldn't likely pick up any language skills.

People will follow you wherever you go because you might be doing something interesting.
People will look over you shoulder constantly while you're doing something because you might be doing something interesting.
You will constantly be asked: 'Tov na?', 'Mok pi na?'. Where do you go, where did you go?
Yes, people will enter you 'private space' without asking.
Yes, people will use you stuff without asking, but deny if you confront.

When in PP...
I do have my own 'private space', but certain persons habitually just walk in. So I explained nicely to please knock first.
Did not happen, so I thought of a bright idea... lock the fucking door when inside...
Ahh.... same persons want to walk in, but door locked. What they do? They go get the key and come in without a knock .
Best to take the door off it's hinges...
GM: Fuck off

There's no need to travel to somewhere like upcountry Pursat or Preah Vihear when places like Kampot and Battambang rapidly give way to countryside. Westerners do not want to be further than 30 minutes from the provincial town for medical reasons and also to make the grocery run less strenuous. I say that because 90% of what you will eat will come from the provincial market if you cannot grow it yourself.
The difference between being 20 minutes out of Kampot and 120 minutes out of Pursat won't change the scenery much but it will change comfort levels markedly. Particularly because the locals in Kampot will be less suspicious/interested about you and your intentions than locals way out the back of nowhere. Also, having Western comforts like milk and bread as staples and not once a month luxuries will save your sanity and a sealed road will save your life for half the year when the dirt ones become dangerously slippery during the day and fatal at night.
Kachang has dispensed a wealth of information but I feel the need to stress provincial living is hard enough without adding rural life. I'm a Phnom Penhite who can only survive in Siem Reap for longer than a month because I need more than 3 of the same overworked provincial expats in my life for a whole year. I refuse to live anywhere accessible only by dirt road so I can have clean clothes for a few days.
