Sounds very similar to Sihanoukville mate (a town recently nominated for the ''Cleanest City Award''). Except here i'm far less likely to get shot at, stabbed, or beaten and gang raped by angry black dudes.....which is nice. Oh and beers are less that a $.gavinmac wrote:You can get a great steak for $15. Beers are about $3.

The mountains in the Western U.S. are amazing, Montana is my favorite....I suppose a home there would be cool.
Sapa has trash thrown everywhere now. There are certainly some nice views, but the place has deteriorated the past few years.ricecakes wrote:
Would you believe this is Vietnam ?
Sapa
Just got back from 4 days up there with the family.
Truly spectacular.
Unfortunately the same goes for a lot of Vietnam. For instance, Hanoi now is an extremely polluted city (air pollution numbers consistently worse than Hong Kong), while fifteen years ago pollution wasn't noticeable. Hopefully the government will take an interest in improving the environment, but there aren't many signs of that currently. Don't get me wrong, I love the country, but the environment in major cities is hurting. (Danang perhaps is an exception so far.)
If you are looking for a place "to retire", then you need to consider a long term view. Any country (such as Vietnam) that is developing rapidly could be wildly different, in a very negative way, in ten or twenty years time. That goes for environment, prices of goods, and many other issues that affect daily life.

I was talking to a friend who is retiring in Thailand with his Thai wife from the US, I told him I was thinking about Cambodia, Sihanoukville area since I like to go to the beach and casinos. He said it is more expensive and the food is not as good or are the bars. I always thought Cambodia was cheaper than Thailand, he is retiring just to the north of Pattaya in his wife village which he has already bought property in her name, so he is not in the city but still close enough. So who know which is less expensive to live in an apartment like back East with A/C and a modern style, I plan on having about $3000+ per month and do not drink more than 2 days a week. but I like my Pizza, Pasta, burgers and steak.

Currently, sliding gently into my retirement, with the help of my camper-van. I think Scoob's used his paparazzi lens to grab and post a picture of me on my early travels.
Pt1. The Grand Summer Tour of the UK, half way through and about to mooch down to Rutland, before a long, slow, meander up to explore the Highlands and Islands, en-route to Orkney, for the Summer Solstice.
Pt2. The Grand Winter Tour of the South coast inc, Devon, Cornwall, followed by France, Spain and Portugal (maybe a little Morocco, not sure yet) I have a real love for Alicante but there is so much of Spain and Portugal I have yet to see.
Pt3. The Grand Spring Tour of Holland, Germany, possibly a few more East European countries. This is quite fluid, atm.
I think by then we will have some idea how the Brexit dust may settle. I think then, if all goes well, a place in Alicante, keep a small camper to spend time trotting off to further explore Spain, France and Portugal, maybe further afield and regular flights further afield, I love Asia but with a base back in Alicante.
Obviously, subject to change, based on that the tours might throw up. Although, I don't yet know enough about them, cave houses in Spain, seem really nice.

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

The crime is out of control. And we're not just talking about normal crime, where one gets mugged and possibly killed when one resists. Were talking about mugging and gratuitous killing.batshitcrazyweirdo wrote:Why is it buggered?
Cape Town has the highest incidence of rape in the world, iirc.
It's not advisable to walk alone at any time, much less after dark.
@Lucky Lucan...for get Gugulethu, Kyaalitsha, get your butt over to the Cape Flats, the Coloured ladies are something special...and could easily be mistaken for Khmers...the Cape Malay women are also beautiful, but very conservative, generally. Also a bit Khmer-looking.
And don't forget the white women in Cape Town...
A group tour will take care of security, still lots to see and do, voted most beautiful city in the world along with Rio, though why gavinmac chose autumn to go there is beyond me. December is fantastic.
I'd retire there if they fixed the crime and I won the Lotto. Very expensive now.

The weather was great when I was there. Camp's Bay is lovely. The city center is overrun with lowlifes and thugs and it's not safe to walk two blocks after dark. I don't remember any city where the core city center seemed as unsafe after dark as Cape Town.

Take a ride out to Simon's Town and see the penguins at Boulders Beach...but maybe you missed the season for them.
The rail journey from CT to Simon's Town is spectacular after Muizenberg...go in a group.
The Brass Bell at Kalk Bay used to be an amazing bar/restaurant with live bands
Hout Bay seafood restaurants...
Don't go swimming...it's freezing.
Buy biltong and enjoy the Cape wines...a tour to Stellenbosch/Paarl/Franschoek is a must

Sintra in Portugal. But only if Cambodia's visa policy changes for the worse.

Lake Malawi...think the best Cambodian beach you've seen, with clearer, fresh water and more moderate temperatures, wildlife still there, 400 species of fish, 200 species plus of birds, very little pollution.
