Things I've learned about being BLACK in KOW
Things I've learned about being BLACK in KOW
Here's a couple of things I've learned since being back in Cambodia...
1. Because I have black skin... I must be from Africa.
2. Because I have black skin... I must sell drugs.
3. Because I have black skin... I must be up to something mischievous.
4. Because I have black skin... I must get paid the very least amount to teach English.
5. Because I have black skin...I should be treated with less respect.
Not sure if I missed anything, but I'm still learning. It's sad really. Not too many black Americans come here or get the chance to travel. What the hell is the problem with just living here? I stay to myself and take care of my* business. I'm even taking up the language this time. Which will cost time and effort, but why do this if the result will be the same?
Any ideas on why this is?

I'm guessing the mischievous Africans have affected locals' perceptions. But I'm guessing they probably think Black Americans are pretty cool.

I don't think so. They've been this way before the www, cocaine, or African scams ever came to Asia. I think they are a little more tolerant now than 20 years ago, especially young people.Starving Pelican wrote:I'm guessing the mischievous Africans have affected locals' perceptions. OP: How long have you been living here?
If your a black American male, i've heard western Europe is a slice of heaven.....
There is a very large contingency of Nigerians that are involved in illegal businesses here, like drug dealing, robberies, etc. It is a disproportionately high amount of them that are literally dangerous to deal with, so a lot of Khmer are very cautious around them.Cynome wrote: Any ideas on why this is?
I speak from experience, I've dealt with maybe 7 (off the top of my head) Nigerians in the past, and 3 of them have been trouble, 2 of which the police were involved, 1 is on the run. Our business deals with thousands of Khmer, and the police have only had to be involved 5 times, 3 of which were illegal Vietnamese...so you can probably understand why business owners are very apprehensive to do anything with blacks in general.
Don't take it personally though, just understand the situation and know that's how it will be. Just like how Americans don't realise not all blacks are from Africa (I never understood why they call blacks "African Americans"), Khmer don't know their geography either. Be a positive influence though, educate those around you if you can, there's not much else you can do.
Yes, having a preconceived notion without experience is bad, but there is a reason for a lot of people's concern here.chkwoot wrote:Prejudice anywhere is an awful thing, no matter why.

Choosing Cambodia being African American out of all the countries in the world isn't really a smart thing to do OP...
