I was under the general impression that Khmers were not keen on Vietnamese for the most part. Perhaps it was more palatable to describe the pimp / procurer of children as Vietnamese to the newspapers Khmer readership.

I'll follow up my previous post (saying that they can't even tell the difference) by providing a source for it. I'm not going to dig through the book for an exact quote, but I remember reading in "HE's Cambodia" that when there were mass deportations of Vietnamese in the 60's I believe, that thousands of Cambodian communists went over with them. Cambodians would not have been allowed to do that, as they were going to learn about communism, etc, but as long as they keep their mouths shut the borders guards on either side couldn't tell who was Vietnamese or Cambodian (I use Cambodian here instead of Khmer, as I would imagine it wasn't 100% ethnic Khmers that were going, as it was happening in the northeast, but I'm not sure).
Now, clearly based on certain behaviors, styles, etc, there can be large difference and it's easier to tell. Just like you couldn't physically tell the difference between an American and a Canadian, until they open their mouths and the first person to apologize about something is the Canadian (I know those aren't ethnicities, it's just a joke). But, straight up based on physical appearance, my understanding is that it's very difficult for Khmer vs. Vietnamese.

It's up to the admins on this one, but let me clarify.
My wife is ethnic Vietnamese but grew up in Cambodia. Racism was a major problem for her and her family, and can still be propagated and played upon by the media. Our family has lost 2 businesses because of such, one of which was burned down and looted (as seen in an earlier thread during last election time). So when I happened to read the story where again, the person was portrayed as Vietnamese when she was very obviously Khmer (maybe lived in Vietnam or was born there), I got angry again.
While searching for images though, it was very hard to find "full" Khmer women without 10 kg of makeup or who weren't mixed. That's the way a lot of Khmer are here when going back a few generations, they can be mixed with Vietnamese or Chinese and have different features or lighter skin. Incidentally, I picked the first pictures who were "full" Khmer that were head on shots, they happened to be little girls. I hadn't even thought of what thread they were being posted in, and that way my gross oversight.
So feel free to delete the thread, I don't like the direction it can go either, I just want to clarify my stance and why I posted the pictures.
EDIT: I took the liberty to edit out my original pic I had posted of comparisons, but its still showing up as quoted. Up to you what to do.

Akira. Just a random thought.
Where do people - Cambodian, Vietnamese or barangs- think you are from?

Despite being asian, more than half of the time people speak to me in English, even if they don't hear me speak beforehand.YaTingPom wrote:Akira. Just a random thought.
Where do people think you are from, either westerners or Cambodians, Vietnamese?
As to what they think I am, I can't reach a common consensus...I've been called Thai, Viet, Chinese, Cambodian American, Korean, etc.

I've an American Japanese friend who's business was looted and burnt down in the LA riots. Next door was a Korean business and was protected by 20 armed Koreans. He asked them for help and they said "Why. You're not Korean"!
Not sure what the point is but I guess there is racism, sexism, and ignorance everywhere. Try to not let it get to you.

@YTP Almost no one thinks I am Japanese, even other Japanese, probably because I'm ethnic Okinawan mostly.
Re: Racism, I respectfully disagree with part of what you say. There comes a point when you have to stand up for what you believe is right and engage in discourse with those who you disagree with. While I don't let hatred consume me (which admittedly it did for a long time), I wont stay silent when I see people heading what I perceive is the wrong way.

a pedigree Viet/Khmer/Thai etc all have their very noticeable differences but it doesnt count for 100% of the population and can be very hard to tell, as i tried to point out with my little game

I don't like the direction it can go, and I'd actually rather not have my name on it as I'm not the one interested in doing racial comparisons on random girls.Hanno wrote:This is not a good thread.

Interesting wiki article. That explains a lot and I can understand now where you are coming from, literally and figuratively speaking!
"Ryukyuans are not a recognized minority group in Japan".
1.3 million not recognised.

Agree, can not see why one's name is attributed to a topic that was not created by that member.AE86 wrote:... and I'd actually rather not have my name on it as I'm not the one interested in doing racial comparisons on random girls.Hanno wrote:This is not a good thread.
