Khmer or Vietnamese
@YTP That term "unrecognised" makes it sound a lot worse than it is, like we're some poor oppressed minority. We all have the same rights and privileges as others, we're just not seen as a different race, which is fine by me. No one's made a big deal of me not being "pure Japanese", they just think I look different and it's a good conversation starter.
Think of it like how American Italians, Germans, Swedes, English, etc. are all considered just "White" or "Caucasian" or how the Jamaicans, Haitians or Africans are all seen as "African American" in the U.S.

But they are not indigenous to that country you are Japanese. If you were born in the USA to Japanese parents, from the Okinawa prefectures, you'd be American Japanese or American Asian.
Anyhoo. Let's not go off track.

a pedigree Viet/Khmer/Thai etc all have their very noticeable differences but it doesnt count for 100% of the population and can be very hard to tell, as i tried to point out with my little game
What is a pedigree Viet/Khmer/Thai and how does it compare to a non-pedigree?
While we are at it, how about a similar small game where we are asked to compare some Brits or Germans? That might be fun. We could try to distinguish between pedigree Germans and non pedigree Germans. That's never been done before and there is nothing racial about it of course.

So has it been determined the lady in question is Vietnamese, or just acts Vietnamese?

Anyhoo.
Or Brits and Australians.
Family at a bar and I told my Oz mate they were poms. "Get fucked. They are as white as sheets especially the kids."
"Honestly. They are from NSW"
"Fuck off are they"
They were Australian of course.
People often think I am Swedish or Norwegian. But I'm of Irish/English descent.
My Khmer wife is often thought to be Chinese as Khmers always talk to her in English or ask me if she understands English "Yes but her Khmer is better" >confused<
How about a Sikh with a thick Glaswegian or (Brummy) Birmingham accent. That's confusing as fuck!

theres nothing racial about comparing the looks of different south east asian women?
would it be deemed not good comparing the looks of different European women? or debating whether Afgan women looked similar to Iraqi women? or whether women from Ethiopia and Kenya shared similar facial features?
theres nothing malicious about the thread, so i dont understand why some people a being sensitive claiming theres a racial slur, when there obviously isnt

Pedigree:
The recorded ancestry or lineage of a person or family.
‘with a pedigree equal to many of the gentry’
2.1 The history or provenance of a person or thing, especially as conferring distinction.
‘the scheme has a long pedigree’
2.2 A genealogical table.
‘my host showed me his family pedigree’
a "non-Pedigree" is called a "Mongrel":
1. Of mixed origin or character: "English has always been a mongrel tongue, a hybrid of arriving idioms" (Mark Abley).
2. Offensive Being a person of mixed background or descent.
the word Mongrel can be seen as Derogatory though, and were not going down that road,
i was just stating that the people of Ethnic Pedigree origin are much easier to differentiate than the many which may have some mixed genes over the years, to which now makes it a lot harder to tell the difference between the countries, hence why i thought id play a harmless game to see if people could identify which girls are from which country

E, Pakse - Laos
F, Surin - Thailand
the point of the game was... the fact none of these girls are Khmer! lol
i wasnt making a racial point, it was quite the opposite, pointing out the fact,
that whilst a lot of Thais/Khmer/Viets are noticeably from their respective countries,
there isnt always that much difference and mistakes can easily be made

I know what you're saying, and I think the main point is here that most people think of Vietnamese as ethnic Vietnamese born in Vietnam. The fact this lady is likely ethnic Khmer and whoever was writing the story was portraying her in a way that people would perceive her as ethnic Vietnamese...that's what I took issue with.YaTingPom wrote:But they are not indigenous to that country you are Japanese. Re: Jamie, I was comparing the perp's wife to ethnic Khmer vs. ethnic Vietnamese (yes they were randomly picked pics online), but what I was trying to distance myself from comparing random girls to each other in a sort of online game of who is from where.

Nothing to do with words it's the meaning that matters. IMO.Jamie_Lambo wrote:thats because of your choice of wordsYaTingPom wrote:If we said "Can't tell the difference they all look the bloody same" that might be a racist slur.

And anyway. No one said that so it's a moot point.
Akira. Yes fair point point. The media here (both western and Khmer) do like to make a thing if they are Vietnamese. Bad youn etc.

before this thread was made i did edit my comment withdrawing my thoughts of her initially looking mostly vietnamese,
tbh ive only spent 3 days in Vietnam, and my only main experience with the Vietnamese are here in Sihanoukville where i have quite a few Vietnamese friends,
which dont always follow your stereotypical Viet stereotype, and blend in very well, some i probably wouldnt have guessed if they hadnt of told me, i think most like to keep it on the down low
