Cambodian Lady Vacationing Overseas
So I still chat regularly with one of the Khmer ladies I met in Cambodia and I really like her, but something seems amiss. She is an administrator for a construction supply company but every 4-6 months, she goes overseas to some very nice locales. Tokyo, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, et al.
I tried to gently probe as to how she does these trips on a $250 a month salary and no parental support (her parents live in a province near the Laos border and are farmers), but she just said she doesn't feel good when I raise the រឿងថ្លៃ (like story/issue of money).
Is it possible to vacation on a shoestring? Or is there something else I should know about her?

It is absolutely possible to achieve all of this on a salary of one million Riel per month provided someone else is paying. Why someone else would be paying should be your next question.

Right that's why I am suspicious. I thought maybe I was being too paranoid and there was some way to spend a week in Bali on the cheap. The Khmer are more thrifty than foreigners.Bosco wrote:It is absolutely possible to achieve all of this on a salary of one million Riel per month provided someone else is paying. There are many possibilities, the trips could be paid for by work, she might be very frugal and save for these trips, she might earn a bit more than she has let on, etc.merchantsmutual wrote:So I still chat regularly with one of the Khmer ladies I met in Cambodia and I really like her, but something seems amiss. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

The work doesn't pay. I am sure of that because I asked her.Lucky Lucan wrote:There are many possibilities, the trips could be paid for by work, she might be very frugal and save for these trips, she might earn a bit more than she has let on, etc.merchantsmutual wrote:So I still chat regularly with one of the Khmer ladies I met in Cambodia and I really like her, but something seems amiss. I thought frugality too but she eats out a lot.
For an administrator like a secretary is it possible more than $250?
So is she a secretary or an administrator?
Because she's hiding something.merchantsmutual wrote:...she just said she doesn't feel good when I raise the រឿងថ្លៃ (like story/issue of money).

She describes her work as data entry with bids, supplies, or making invoices, et alAE86 wrote:So is she a secretary or an administrator?

^^Okay that gives me a better idea.
Either or, that kind of salary might work for Thailand or Vietnam, but no way in hell would you save enough for Tokyo or Hong Kong, and I say that being from there.
Someone's giving her a lot of extra money on the side, or she's stealing it. I suspect the latter *edit* since she's in data entry and over invoices, so she can misrepresent the books and skim off the top. I'm not saying this to be demeaning, I'm just stating what I've seen before first hand.

So I guess I should cut her off huh? This sucks. We had such nice conversations and she seemed so sweet.AE86 wrote:^^Okay that gives me a better idea.

They always do.merchantsmutual wrote:We had such nice conversations and she seemed so sweet.
I'm not in the business of giving relationship advice, I just know numbers and business, so that's what I can comment on.
I know what I would do, but the choice is up to you.

Thanks for your input. It makes more sense than the benefactor theory to me just based on my conversations with her. When we met in person she also paid for me, oddly enough.AE86 wrote:They always do.merchantsmutual wrote:We had such nice conversations and she seemed so sweet.

A lot of Khmer workers that have stolen from me seem to be in the mindset that wealth isn't created, but falls from the sky into random people's pockets, so they don't even feel guilty about it. They know it'll get them fired, but it's still their "right" to steal from someone who has a lot more. It's the low education socialist mindset honestly, which would also explain why they don't mind spreading their wealth on occasion too, especially for someone else who has more money than them as well.
I'm not saying those kinds of thieves are all bad at heart, they're just clueless to how a lot of things work. It sure makes it bloody difficult to do business here though.

Why? Is she doing you harm? Is it unacceptable to you that she considers her financial, and perhaps other, affairs none of you business?
