I Paid Pretty Inflated Prices in Cambodia
I was reading the paper this morning and it describes a karaoke night out on the town for a few guys
Basically it says they had a case and a half of beer, free fish and chicken, and 4 ladies accompanying them while they drank and all for $50. Makes me embarrassed to say I was quoted prices similar to that for just myself, one lady or none, and a few bottles of water. No wonder the Khmer salary goes much further for the Khmer

They are probably talking about a shack or ordinary local karaoke, which are as cheap as a beer-garden. The modern opaque KTVs are a lot more expensive. A can of beer will be around $4 and a small plate of fruit or nuts about $15. The only time I remember going to one it was something like $15 an hour for the room, the singers were $5 each and the bill for myself, a Cham mate and Mac was $90 after an hour. And that was around 2009.

Here's the article:

The customer and his mate were frequent regulars who both have sweethearts who work in the KTV. They drank one and a half cases of beer and got 2 free dishes of food: grilled fish and grilled chicken and had 4 hostesses sit and drink with them. Bill was $50.
The guys went home drunk. At home one realised he'd forgotten his motorbike and went back to get it. Got back to the KTV, but couldn't find his parking ticket, got into an argument with the KTV supervisor, escalated into fistycuffs, supervisor got a bump above his left eye.
Aggressor went home leaving his moto behind. Police are keeping the motobike until the aggressor comes to sort things out.

Classy place on street 2004 right up against the airport.

That's 36 beers, a fish and a chicken and 4 singers for $50? That's insanely cheap, but then the place looks like a flea pit and you generally get what you pay for.Rama wrote: one and a half cases of beer and got 2 free dishes of food: grilled fish and grilled chicken and had 4 hostesses sit and drink with them. The dancing silhouettes on the wall are very enticing, if orangutans are your thing.

youre all mad paying them prices,
ive been drinking up this area before(2004), and had a KTV private Airconned room,
me and 2 barang mates, included was 3 girls, 4 plates of free food (snack food) and a crate of beer for 2 hours for $30
i go the bigger KTVs too (City Gold, 333, Shanghai, King Pharoah etc)
you buy a crate of beer and get the room for 2 hours, why on earth were you paying for your drinks by the can?
beer your looking at around $50-65 for a crate, ABC youre looking at around $60-75 for a crate depending on venue
girls a $5 tip each
we also organised a deal at one KTV where the 4 of us had unlimited beer for 2 hours for $70, +1 hour was $10, we stayed there for 5 hours, total bill $150
what the hells a modern opaque ktv? lol
OP im guessing you was taken to the KTV by a tuk tuk driver? lol
not a good way to start tbh
you went to a KTV, alone, "partied" with one girl, and only drank a few bottles of water?

That was how it was sold. As I said it was about 2009, and there weren't hundreds of the places around competing by selling beer by the crate. Other places like Rock and Golden Boss used to charge similar prices, helped keep most of the riff-raff out I guess.why on earth were you paying for your drinks by the can?

My travel insurance didn't cover anything that occurred when intoxicated. I also don't like the idea of sleeping with any working women. So I just went to sing the karaoke songs I had gotten to know so well through Khmer lessons. Worth it but a bit pricey.Jamie_Lambo wrote:

The girls just sit down and sing along with you, sleeping with them is hardly compulsory.merchantsmutual wrote:

You're trolling us, right? Getting your revenge on all the grief we've given you? Well played.merchantsmutual wrote:My travel insurance didn't cover anything that occurred when intoxicated. He was in Cambodia for the language, and he was in karaoke bars here because he likes to sing.Miguelito wrote: You're trolling us, right? Getting your revenge on all the grief we've given you? Well played.
