Is Gofundme the alternative insurance for foreigners in SEA?
In the past couples months I often see news online whether the person has died, in accidents or in some sort of needs. Gofundme seems to be a popular choice. Surprisingly it works. "Goal to reach 5k" and anywhere up to 200k. though it does not reach the asking amount some of the time, but usually over the 50% mark. I like it!

I hate it.
It's putting pressure on others to cover your oversight/lack of planning/laziness/cheapness.
I've never donated to one and am not sure in what scenario I would be convinced to do so.

Agreed. Save a few bucks on insurance and then beg online when things turn sour....

I have donated a few times trusting people genuinely needed help, and some of them did. But this one time, it hits close to home found about the person asking of the behalf has a spa/massage parlor and and owned an accommodation place. That sucks big time.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:I hate it.

The intent is to put pressure. I don't necessarily accept the pressure.violet wrote:If a person feels pressure, that is an internal driver to be overcome.
Even the name irritates me - 'go fund me' it's an instruction, not a request.
It's arrogance, entitlement and other big words which will come to me later.

Couldn't agree more, and it is symptomatic of the prevailing culture of entitlement and forgoing of personal responsibility? Want to travel but don't can't be arse to work and save for it like people have been doing for centuries? Now worries: go fund me, because someone else will pick up the tab.
Help, I've got sick overseas. I really should have done the adult, responsible thing and covered such eventualities as medical insurance when coming to a third world country with no functioning health provision, but I was too eager to come out and besides: hookers and beer was more important. No problem: someone else will help - go fund me.
Go fuck yourself, go fund me.

Sometimes people are inexperienced and don't know..for example a friend of a friend's children whomhad insurance but didn't realise scooters weren't covered. Was it their responsibility to know what is covered and what is not? Yes, but insurance companies dont make it easy, in general and sometimes we learn the hard way. Then there are the situations where there was insurance but things change dramatically and leave a person without cover for a period of tme....dicey but not through failure to plan just a result of life shitting on them in some form or other.
As for gofundme etc. i have at times felt a little bad for not supporting a friend in something they feel strongly enough about to create or participate in a gofundme. At other times, when everything aligns, I participate. The choice is still mine. I either participate and feel bad or i dont and i feel bad. I choose the option that most aligns with who i am as a person and which best suits my financial situation at the time. To each their own. I may disagree with the choices of sme when they create these, but it is up to them and those who wish to support. It is none of my business who does what. At least it isn't a law or a controlling influence from a ruler etc.

Certainly a resounding yes.....violet wrote:Sometimes people are inexperienced and don't know..for example a friend of a friend's children whom had insurance but didn't realize scooters weren't covered. Was it their responsibility to know what is covered and what is not?
I do not let that "inexperienced" stuff fly either. In the days of Google there is really no excuse for being ignorant.
When I started traveling, it was well before LP, mobile phones, and Skype. You better had your shit together, simple as that.

I think it is mostly the age of the travelers. When I was 19 and going somewhere (and more used to being under my parents' wing), it may have seemed not at all unusual for others to be concerned about your well-being enough to give you money. I mean, that's how it has always been, no? And if others are asking for money, why not me? But now that I am in my 30s, it seems like a bad joke. By this age, people should have enough money to throw another $150 at decent travel insurance. We all have careers and some of us have families, too.
What also surprises me is the lack of foresight in the sense that travel insurance is actually fairly cheap. You can buy a basic "GTFO of dodge" package for a few months for maybe $400.

I read today that Thailand is considering mandatory travel insurance for tourists (probably a scam since they will probably force You to buy their own insurance at the airport since they will probably not recognize many home insurance policies). Maybe Cambodia should include this in the visa fee. Maybe they need to check people's insurance policy before allowing entry? But I guess this scam will continue anyway.

I've contributed once, for an old friend (70yo, known 7yrs) who was really in a pickle. His pals, we passed the hat, and had real good time with the donation names and messages. I was "PRINCE ABDULLAH GOODLUCK" from nigeria, giving rather than taking for a change....

I once trolled Jimmy Wales the founder of Wikipedia on Quora about the millions of dollars donated every year, he responded it goes to staff salaries etc. Then someone else responded in my thread about the 10 of thousands he made on invited public speeches, he was like oh that's Wikimedia it is for profit. I did the same with gofundme yesterday, but this time i inquired them directly, they said 5% of the donated money will be deducted but will go to a good cause, but according to my calculation it is between 7-10% depending on country and currency.

Is this OP the flying chicken aka Phat Kunthea? Amazing he slides right back in here like an old friend. If it is him, he must have come back from the Betty Ford clinic as he is making a lot more sense than before.
