"Nathan A. Thompson sees alarming uptick in attacks on press and NGOs in Cambodia"
"Ruling party is threatening to undermine Cambodia's democratic gains, he says"
CNN AKA N.Thompson waging in with a biased argument about 'democracy'.
2nd of September for the 'meet up', should be an intimate affair about free press.
Editor's Note: Nathan A. Thompson is president of the Overseas Press Club of Cambodia. For more information, please see www.nathanathompson.co.uk. The views expressed in this commentary are his own.

PPPost wrote:Sopheap, who is the publisher of Deum Ampil newspaper, said he was contacted by the Daily and met with them to suggest three options. He refused to divulge details or disclose with whom he met, though a story on his newspaper’s website named General Manager Douglas Steele.
“I asked him whether they wanted to continue or to close. He said he wants to continue. Then I gave the ideas, one, two, three, but I’d like to hide the ideas,” he said.

A sad day for press freedom. The Daily was an important voice in Cambodia.

At townhall meeting yesterday, Daily insisted it had been operating at a loss since 2008Felgerkarb wrote:Sweep and clear.

Disappointed to see it end like this. The only honorable way would be to continue operations until physically forced to stop, and get that on camera. A livestream of cops rushing in to pull journalists away from their keyboards and lattes would earn more support than the meh-level statement they released.

That's good, but it would be better with a raid in it. Imagine a group of hipsters chanting "this is what democracy looks like" with old typewriters breaking and people screaming. Legendary, and then cut to a scene where the competent authorities kick an antique printing press. That'd be some serious awards with a book by Bernie handed out for free on the Oprah show.cyclingqueen wrote:Last day of the Daily is being filmed right now

Agreed, but impossible on SOOOOOOOOOOO many levels, although certainly 1 or 2 hipster-esque chanters could be foundAlexandra wrote:That's good, but it would be better with a raid in it.
