First They Killed My Father
So yesterday Angelina Joilee's film, First They Killed My Father came out on Netflix. I don't know if Netflix in the US is different than if accessed around the world, but I'm sure it will be available via bit torrent soon if not already.
Watched it last night with the wife and was surprised by how well produced it was. Great cinematography and good acting. It is in Khmer with English subtitles. Overall, I we thought it was a job well done by Miss Joilee. Not overly graphic. I like that with her name attached as director, it will possibly educate, in some small way, people who don't know much about the Khmer Rouge, including many younger Khmericans and others born in the west.
Did anyone else watch it yet or catch word of it coming out?

Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.
I watched some of it today as Mrs Logos somehow found it on FB and called me to watch it.
The little I saw reflects DM's comments, it looked well done and realistic and I'll get back to it to watch it entirely.

I saw it a few months back at a screening. Overall impressed by the production, though there were a couple of parts where the audience laughed out loud at what were fairly serious parts.
Perhaps more of a reflection of the audience but strange none the less.

Yeah, I had a couple of old ladies sitting near me at the stadium who burst out laughing when there was a scene with a corpse floating in a ditch with a plastic bag over the head. Da fuq?...there were a couple of parts where the audience laughed out loud..
There's a thread about it here. It seems to be getting very disparate reviews since it was released on Netflix:

It's hard to fit the story of Luong(spelling) and her book into a normal length film. I also would have liked to see the atrocities committed by the KR more graphic and displayed. It seems a bit too cleaned up if reality was what Joilee was going for, especially considering Netflix is it's main vessel for delivery, which doesn't censor much at all. It's not like she had to keep it clean for a major international theater release.

I watched it at the cinema here last Wednesday.
It was a good, well-produced, well-filmed movie.
Regardless of the controversy surrounding Ung Luong's memories, I think the movie did a pretty good job at reflecting what the KR ideology and KR cadres were doing to children.
The storyline is pretty predictable if you've watched The Killing Fields and read KR accounts (KR marching in, evacuation, forced labor camps, stealing for survival, runaway, mines, liberation), but the movie was providing a new vantage point, from the eyes of children.
While in TKF, we saw historical events because Dith Pran was a translator for journalists, here in FTKMF we saw what children were subjected to.
Actors were outstanding, especially the mother and Luong, and while I wasn't really impressed with the father's performance, the film did a good job at depicting the loving relationships between all of them.
There are some subtle messages and symbols too in the movie but these would be spoilers.

I think the movie could've been made shorter. After the first half it felt like somebody had given up. People stopped talking, the cutting between scenes became more and more aggressive almost as if to just fit the remaining parts by any means necessary. The build up was too long and the rest was rushed. Maybe they did some artsy stuff I didn't get.

The passage of time portrayed in the film messed with my head. Kids change a lot in 3.5-4 years and it felt like the whole film took place over a year. It was cliche but the only bit that really moved me was the very end which I won't spoil. Production and acting were indeed quite good.

Agreed, actually said to Sophea something similar. End kinda came out of nowhere and I realized that it was 4 years later from the start.
Agree about ending.

The book was questioned by me and a group of friends. It is fully shit. Got a friend to question her after it was written at one of the top the 5 university in world in Massachusetts, Ung avoided a question after the presentation. Had a brief talk with Brad Pitt when he was in Siem Reap, I simply asked how is the filming he gave a wink and said it is for Hollywood.
